ESU Football Posts 49-21 Win over Cheyney, Improves to 5-1 (4-1 PSAC)

EAST STROUDSBURG - Redshirt junior quarterback Matt Soltes threw five touchdown passes to four different receivers in the first half as East Stroudsburg University improved to 5-1 (4-1 PSAC) with its fourth straight win, 49-21 over Cheyney in PSAC football on Saturday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
 
Soltes was 12-for-18 for 258 yards and five TD and threw for 208 yards in the first half as the Warriors built a 35-0 halftime lead. ESU ran 21 plays for 250 yards in the first half and scored on its first five possessions.
 
He connected with Warriors receivers for TD's on three straight passes in the first quarter, throwing a five-yard TD to R-Jr. WR Jon Schnaars, a 23-yard TD to R-So. TB Robert Healy and a 31-yard TD to R-Sr. TE Steven Jones in a four-minute span.
 
Soltes threw a 30-yard TD to Sr. WR Ray Dominguez and a six-yard TD to Schnaars in the second quarter.

ESU earned its 35 consecutive win over Cheyney, extending an NCAA all-division record for consecutive wins in an uninterrupted series. ESU holds a 58-1 advantage in the all-time series with Cheyney's only win coming in 1979.
 
Healy ran for 98 yards on eight carries, including 65 yards on three carries after ESU received the second-half kickoff. His 12-yard TD run gave the Warriors a 42-0 lead.
 
Cheyney (0-6, 0-5) scored 21 second-half points, including two TD catches for Khalif Dandy (11 catches, 146 yards) from freshman quarterback Michael Campbell (14-for-20, 186 yards, 2 TD, 1 interception).
 
Soltes' pass efficiency rating of 278.7 is the fourth-highest in ESU history. The only returning Harlon Hill candidate in Super Region 1, Soltes has thrown 24 TD passes and is averaging 359.7 yards passing and 404.2 yards of total offense through six games.
 
Healy scored three TD, giving him 10 on the season (six rushing, four receiving). He has more than 140 yards from scrimmage in each of the first six games, including 146 against Cheyney.
 
Jr. WR Joe Welk led ESU with three catches for 92 yards, Schnaars had three catches for 28 yards and two TD and Jones had two catches for 60 yards and a TD.
 
ESU sacked Campbell five times, including 2.5 sacks by R-Sr. DE Brandon Gattelli, who was tied for the PSAC lead with six sacks entering the weekend.
 
ESU gained 410 yards on just 43 offensive plays, tied for the fewest by an ESU team in 424 games under head coach Denny Douds.
 
Douds tied Lou Holtz for 20th on the NCAA all-division wins list with 249 career victories. He can become the 20th coach in NCAA history, and third in Division II history, with 250 career wins next week at Millersville (0-6, 0-5).

* Douds improved to 249-172-3 in his 41st season. He has coached 424 games, 10th-most in NCAA football history.
* Douds will tie Bear Bryant for 9th on the NCAA all-division list of games coached (425) next Saturday (Oct. 18) at Millersville.
