KUTZTOWN - Sophomore William Berry broke an eight-day old school record in the men's high jump to lead East Stroudsburg University's track and field program at Kutztown on Saturday in its final meet for next weekend's PSAC Championships.

Berry cleared 6-11 3/4 to break the mark of 6-11 set by sophomore Seth Bailey last Friday at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games at the Armory in New York City. Bailey's mark improved the previous record of 6-10 1/2, set by Mike Newhard in 2002 and equaled by Newhard and Brad Fees in 2003.

Senior Elizabeth Madden broke her own school record in the weight throw at 52-3 3/4, improving her record of 52-1 3/4 that she set last year to win the PSAC championship.

The Warriors recorded 10 new PSAC qualifiers and four improved PSAC marks going into next week's championships.

New qualifiers came from freshman Alexis Bell in the 55m dash (7.51), senior Kim Wernerspach (2:19.96) and senior Meghan Ragard in the 800m (2:24.14), freshman Robert Garvey (52.03) and senior Keith Parker-Washington in the 400m (52.07), senior Amr Aldeen in the 800m (1:59.03), junior Chris Ott in the mile (4:29.91), freshman La Treil Ridgeway in the high jump (6-0 3/4) and sophomores Patrick Rynearson (13-11 1/4) and Eric Conard (13-5 1/4) in the pole vault.

Improved PSAC marks were turned in by Berry, Madden, freshman Brandie Tartza in the 55m hurdles (8.85) and sophomore Kirsten Muhaw in the pole vault (11-4 1/4).

ESU athletes won eight individual events and two relays - Bell in the 55m dash, junior Danielle Smith in the 400m (1:00.09), Wernerspach in the 800m, junior Christina O'Connor in the high jump (5-6 1/2), Madden in the weight throw, Bailey in the men's 55m dash (6.66), Berry in the high jump and junior Travis Toth in the men's weight throw (62-1 1/4).

The women's and men's 4x400m relays also won their events.

The Warriors have 79 PSAC qualifying performances - 39 women, 40 men - going into the PSAC Championships on March 1-2 (Saturday-Sunday) at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

ESU enters next week with eight athletes provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships, which will be held March 14-15 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Athletes with marks that are expected to qualify for the field are Toth in the weight throw (currently 5th - 63-7 3/4), Berry in the high jump (7th - 6-11 3/4), Bailey in the high jump (t-9th - 6-11) and O'Connor in the women's high jump (t-10th - 5-8).

Other provisional marks are owned by junior Damien Boham in the men's 400m, junior Mike Smith in the men's weight throw, Wernerspach in the women's 3000m and senior Theresa Horn in the women's pentathlon.
