EAST STROUDSBURG – All-America junior guard
Whis Grant had 22 points and a career-high nine rebounds, freshman forward
Rasheed Moore added 17 points and No. 3-ranked East Stroudsburg University (21-1, 11-1) rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 93-64 win over Millersville in PSAC East men's basketball Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.
ESU fell 82-80 at Lock Haven on Thursday to end a school-record 20-game winning streak, but came back with a strong defensive effort to shut down the Marauders. The Warriors were the final undefeated team remaining in Division II.
The victory was the 1,000th in program history, with ESU improving to 1,000-976 in its 87th season of basketball as a four-year institution. The Warriors are in the midst of the ninth 20-win season in program history, and fourth in the last five years, under head coach
Jeff Wilson (204-128).
Grant scored 15 points in the first half as ESU led 49-30 at halftime. The Warriors had an 11-0 run midway through the first half, then another 11-0 run spanning halftime to put the game away.
The Warriors shot 52.2 percent from the field and 12-for-25 from the three-point line, led by Grant – who was an efficient 7-for-9 overall and 5-for-6 from downtown. He came up one rebound shy of his first career double-double and went over the 1,300-point mark for his career.
Moore was also 7-for-9 from the field and added six rebounds. ESU held a 47-28 advantage on the glass, including 14 offensive boards.
ESU held Millersville to 35.1 percent (20-for-57) shooting from the field, and under 36 percent in both halves.
Junior guard
Matt Tobin had eight points and six assists, right on his PSAC-leading average, and redshirt junior guard
Will Brown and sophomore guard
Jamal Nwaniemeka added nine points each.
Nwaniemeka scored seven of ESU's first eight points in the second half, helping the Warriors extended a 49-30 halftime advantage to 55-30 in the first 1:36 of the period.
Senior forward
Zechariah Runkle added three points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks in just 18 minutes, and sparked a 15-5 start as the Warriors never trailed.
It was 18-18 at the 12-minute media timeout in the first half, after a 13-3 Millersville run, but Grant got to the line for two free throws and Moore followed with a three-point play to key an 11-0 run.
Tobin followed with a layup, Grant scored and was fouled, and freshman forward
Steve Harris cleaned up the miss with the first of two consecutive putbacks.
Freshman guard
Anthony McKie came on late in the first half and knocked won two three-pointers in less than 40 seconds, pushing the lead from 10 to 16.
The Warriors added five points in the final 40 seconds of the half as Moore had a putback, scored on a steal and assist by Runkle, and Tobin made 1-of-2 at the foul line to close it.
The Warriors, who lead Division II with 21 victories, travel to Shippensburg (2-19, 0-11) on Wednesday night.
ESU holds a two-game lead over Bloomsburg (13-8, 9-3) for first place in the PSAC East, and a three-game lead over West Chester (15-7, 8-4) for one of the two home playoff games in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 4.
Lock Haven (14-7, 7-4), Millersville (9-11, 5-6), Kutztown (7-14, 5-6), Mansfield (6-16, 4-8), Cheyney (3-19, 3-9) and Shippensburg follow in the divisional standings.
