ESU Baseball Splits with IUP, Improves to 9-2

ABERDEEN, Md. – Redshirt senior Nico Delerme hit a grand slam and a two-run single for six RBI in a 17-1 win in the opener as East Stroudsburg University and IUP split a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Monday at the Ripken Baseball Complex in Maryland.

IUP won the second game, 10-2, with shortstop Dylan Tice going 4-for-5 with four RBI for the Crimson Hawks (4-6).

ESU (9-2) got a strong outing from redshirt sophomore Matt Festa in game one. Festa allowed one run on six hits in 6.0 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.41 in four games (three starts) while earning his first career win for the Warriors.

Earlier in the day, ESU remained No. 2 in this week's NCBWA Division II Atlantic Region poll.

ESU had 12 hits and drew 10 walks in the opener with senior OF Chris Knott going 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs, Delerme going 2-for-4 with six RBI and two runs and sophomore 2B Nick Rabasco going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.

The Warriors trailed 1-0 through two innings before scoring 17 unanswered runs – 16 in the last three innings. Knott had a two-out RBI single to tie the game in the third, then Delerme punctuated a five-run fifth with his grand slam to put the Warriors ahead 6-1. They added four runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh.

In the nightcap, IUP scored five unearned runs after a two-out error in the fourth inning, and finished the day with a four-run seventh.

ESU scored two in the fifth on a two-run single by Delerme, who finished the day with eight RBI.

Knott, the PSAC East Player of the Week for the season-opening stretch, moved into third at ESU with 116 career RBI, trailing only Kevin Thompson (124, 2005-09) and Eric Boyer (118, 2010-13).

Knott is hitting .447 (17-for-38) with 14 RBI and 12 runs, followed by Delerme at .424 (14-for-33) with 17 RBI and eight runs.

The Warriors are back on the field Friday with a doubleheader against Clarion, which will be played at Millersville.
