JOHNSTOWN – East Stroudsburg University redshirt senior Brendan McKeown (174) is an NCAA Division II national qualifier for the third straight year, finishing as the Super Region 1 runner-up at this weekend's tournament at Pitt-Johnstown.

McKeown, the tournament's No. 2 seed and ranked No. 6 nationally, dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 1-ranked Joey Davis (Notre Dame Ohio), the defending national champ at 165 pounds, in the regional final.

He advanced to the final with a 5-4 decision over #3 seed August Mizia (Mercyhurst) in the semifinals. He pinned Christopher Matthews (Gannon) in 2:13 the quarterfinals in his only match on Saturday.

McKeown was the defending regional champion and Outstanding Wrestler. He won the 174-pound regional title last year with a 3-2 decision over Mike Williams (UNC-Pembroke), who was also the defending national champ at 165.

McKeown is ESU's first three-time national qualifier since Jeremy Sluyter (118/125) went to the DI championships four times from 1997-2000.

McKeown was a three-time regional finalist at 174 pounds, falling in the final to Travis Sheehy (Newberry) as a redshirt sophomore in 2012 when he was ranked sixth entering the regional.

He improved to 3-0 in his career against Mizia with his win in the semifinals. He also knocked off Mizia, the #2 seed, with a 13-8 decision in the semifinals in 2012, and had a third-period fall (6:23) in a dual on January 25 at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Junior Anthony Marino (125) placed 4th, falling one win short of a trip to the NCAA Championships. He had a first-period pin (2:07) of No. 4 seed Ryan Bohince (Mercyhurst) in the consolation semis before falling to No. 3 Brian Hauser, 12-3, in the consolation final. Hauser also decisioned Marino, 7-5, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Sophomore Tyson Searer (197) fell by a 9-2 decision to Jalal Paige (Shippensburg) in the consolation semifinals.

Redshirt sophomore Eric Howey (149) and redshirt junior Luke DeLuise (184) lost their consolation quarterfinal bouts.

Searer and redshirt senior Braden Turner (165) were both national qualifiers last year. Turner went 0-2 on Saturday to finish the season with a 26-7 record. He was a two-time national qualifier and an All-American as a redshirt sophomore in 2012 during his three-year career at ESU.

ESU finished sixth of 12 schools in the region, scoring 29.0 points. Notre Dame (Ohio), ranked No. 1 nationally, won the regional title with 101.5 points in their first year in Super Region 1. Mercyhurst (65.5), Pitt-Johnstown (61.0), Kutztown (39.0) and Gannon (31.0) rounded out the top five.

This marked the first year that the region only received three national qualifiers at each weight class – previously, the top four finishers at each weight advanced to the NCAA Championships.

McKeown will compete at the NCAA Division II Championships in Cleveland, Ohio on March 14-15 (Friday-Saturday). He placed sixth last year to earn All-America status, and can become ESU's first multiple-time All-American since Jack Cuvo (118) was a three-time DI All-American from 1987-89, winning national titles the last two years.
