ESU Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Washington & Lee, UNC-Charlotte

LEXINGTON, Va. - East Stroudsburg University athletes produced 31 PSAC qualifying marks and won nine events - six individual and three relays - as the Warriors opened the outdoor track and field season this weekend at Washington & Lee and UNC-Charlotte.

ESU's men's and women's teams are both coming off second-place finishes at the PSAC Indoor Championships earlier this month. The Warriors' four national qualifiers - All-America sophomore high jumper Seth Bailey, sophomore William Berry (high jump), junior Christina O'Connor (high jump) and junior Travis Toth (weight throw) - did not participate this weekend.

Junior Mike Smith etched ESU's only top-10 mark with a PR of 166-10 in the hammer throw, fifth-best in school history.

Junior Danielle Smith, coming off her sixth and seventh career PSAC championships, won the 100m dash in 12.23 seconds and 200m in 25.15 seconds. Other individual winners were sophomore Tirzah Johnson in the triple jump (35-1 3/4), senior Chris Schneider in the 1500m (4:02.28), freshman Steven Morgan in the 110m hurdles (15.22) and freshman La Treil Ridgeway in the triple jump (43-11 3/4).

Top relay finishes came from the women's 4x100m relay (senior Rachel Pierantozzi, freshman Alexis Bell, Johnson and Smith) in 48.57 seconds, the women's 4x400m relay (senior Meghan Ragard, Bell, freshman Erin Brady and Smith) in 3:58.05, and the men's 4x400m relay (senior Keith Parker-Washington, junior Damien Boham, freshman Angel Gaetan, sophomore Derrick Washington) in 3:16.96.

Senior Theresa Horn, freshman Brandie Tartza and sophomore Eric Conard competed in the multi's at UNC-Charlotte on Thursday and Friday. Horn was sixth in the heptathlon (3,985 points), and Conard was ninth in the decathlon (5,575).
