Chris Knott hit four home runs, becoming East Stroudsburg University's career leader, as the Warriors pounded Mansfield pitching for a pair of wins (14-8, 19-6) to sweep this weekend's four-game series on Sunday in north-central Pennsylvania.
ESU (24-11, 10-8) opened the series with a come-from-behind 5-4 win in game one on Saturday, followed by a 9-3 victory in the nightcap. The sweep is the Warriors' first in divisional play since taking all four games from Millersville in 2010, and puts the defending PSAC champions back into playoff contention with two weekends and 10 games remaining.
Knott entered the day with 15 career home runs, then hit two in both games on Sunday to set ESU's career record with 19 round-trippers. He surpasses Kevin Thompson (2005-09) and Jeff Pfeiffer (1984-85), who both hit 17 home runs at ESU.
Knott has set five career records this season and is within reach of several more. He currently holds marks for home runs (19), triples (16), extra-base hits (78), total bases (330) and RBI (142), and ranks fourth in doubles (43 – one from the record), third in stolen bases (56), fifth in runs (137), fifth in walks (82) and tied for fifth with 198 career hits.
The Warriors hit seven home runs Sunday, with redshirt senior catcher
Nico Delerme (8th career), senior 1B
Mike Tenaglia (5th career) and redshirt sophomore OF
Matt Walewski (2nd career) also going deep.
ESU opened game two with an 11-run first inning, scoring seven runs before the Mounties (16-15, 4-12) got an out, and collecting 12 hits in the frame. Redshirt sophomore SS
Drew Hercik, Knott and senior catcher
Eric Forth all had two hits in the first inning.
ESU had 22 hits overall in the nightcap, its most in a divisional game since at least 2003.
The Warriors' 19 runs are their most against a PSAC East opponent since a 21-15 win at Shippensburg in 1997.
Knott is the first ESU player with multiple home runs in both games of a doubleheader since at least 2003.
The most recent Warriors with two home runs in a game were Ryan Guarino and Carey Zimmerman, who both had two of ESU's seven total home runs in the first game of a doubleheader at Chestnut Hill in 2010.
Six Warriors had at least three hits on Sunday as ESU was 37-for-77 (.481) at the plate. Knott was 6-for-10 with seven RBI and six runs, Delerme and Walewski were both 5-for-8, Forth was 4-for-6, Hercik was 4-for-9 and Tenaglia was 3-for-8, including two doubles, a home run and six RBI.
