Warriors Baseball Splits at Lock Haven, Hosts 2nd Half of Series on Sunday

LOCK HAVEN – Redshirt sophomore Matt Festa threw a complete game and four Warriors had multiple hits as East Stroudsburg University posted a 10-5 win in the nightcap for a split at Lock Haven in PSAC East baseball on Saturday.

ESU (19-10, 5-7) gained its fourth straight split this week and hosts Lock Haven on Sunday in the second half of this weekend's series.

Lock Haven (10-11, 2-6) won the opener, 9-6, breaking the game open with two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings after ESU scored four runs in the top of the fourth to tie it at 5-5.

Festa got through at least the sixth inning for his fourth straight start to improve to 2-1 on the season. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He has thrown a team-high 39.2 innings in eight games (six starts).

ESU had 10 hits in both games led by its leadoff hitter, sophomore 2B Nick Rabasco, who was 5-for-9 with a double, three RBI and two runs. Rabasco is hitting .552 (16-for-29) with four doubles, eight RBI and 12 runs in eight games this week.

Redshirt senior catcher Nico Delerme reached in seven of eight plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, two runs and five walks. Senior catcher Eric Forth was 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs and three walks.

Senior OF Chris Knott had his 16-game hitting streak, tied for ESU's third-longest since 2003, come to an end in game two. Knott is hitting .410 (41-for-100) with a PSAC-high 17 extra-base hits and 31 RBI entering Sunday.

Game 1 – L 9-6

Lock Haven scored multiple runs in four innings – two in the first, three in the second and two each in the fourth and sixth – to win the opener. Austin Botts extended LHU's lead with a two-run homer in the sixth.

ESU scored four runs on four hits to tie the game at 5-5 in the fourth inning as Knott drew a bases loaded walk, Delerme had an RBI single, Forth hit a sacrifice fly and redshirt sophomore 1B Matt Walewski had an RBI single.

The Warriors scored one run in the seventh on an RBI single by Rabasco and got the tying run to the plate, but Tyler Eckman got a popup and a strikeout to end it.

Rabasco was 3-for-5, Delerme and redshirt sophomore 3B Drew Hercik both had two hits and Knott singled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

ESU had a season-high 12 runners left on base, including the bases loaded in the first and third innings.

Game 2 – W 10-5

ESU scored double-figure runs in a PSAC East game for the first time this season, as Forth was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, Rabasco was 2-for-4 with two RBI at the top of the order, Walewski was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run and freshman 3B Ben Bortz was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

Knott walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Forth in the first inning, then reached on an error, stole second and scored on another single by Forth in the third to tie the game at 2-2.

The Warriors took the lead for good in the fourth on a two-out RBI double by Rabasco after Walewski and Bortz singled to start the inning.

ESU extended its lead to 6-2 with three runs in the fifth, all with two outs, as Walewski belted a two-run triple down the right field line to score Delerme and Forth, who drew a pair of one-out walks. Walewski came home on a wild pitch.

The Warriors padded their lead with four runs in the seventh. Delerme drew his third walk of the game, Forth singled and Hercik walked to load the bases. Bortz hit a two-RBI double, redshirt sophomore OF Andy Brandstetter brought Hercik home with a bunt and Rabasco had his fifth hit of the day with an RBI single.

Festa gave up a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to set the final score at 10-5.
