Berry, O’Connor, Toth Selected for NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships

EAST STROUDSBURG – Juniors Christina O'Connor (high jump) and Travis Toth (hammer) and sophomore William Berry (high jump) will represent East Stroudsburg University at the 2014 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, it was announced Tuesday.

The national championships will be held May 22-24 (Thursday-Saturday) at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan.

All three were national qualifiers during the indoor season and will make repeat trips as they look for All-America status with top-eight finishes. O'Connor and Toth will make their third NCAA appearances, while Berry is a national qualifier for the second time.

O'Connor, an All-American as a sophomore during the 2013 indoor season, is ESU's top-ranked athlete. She is tied for ninth on the national list with a mark of 5-7 3/4, which she cleared to win her third career PSAC title on May 3.

O'Connor was sixth indoors as a sophomore at 5-8, and ninth at 5-7 during this past indoor season in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Toth is ranked 13th in the hammer with a mark of 198-11, which won the PSAC title on May 2. He was an indoor qualifier in the weight throw, placing 11th with a mark of 60-5 3/4.

Last spring, Toth placed 13th in the hammer (183-9) in his first NCAA trip to Pueblo, Colorado.

Berry is an NCAA qualifier for the second time, entering tied for 17th on the national list at 6-10 1/4 which won his first career PSAC title on May 2. Indoors, he was tied for ninth with a mark of 6-8 3/4.

ESU had eight other provisional qualifiers in junior Danielle Smith (400m), sophomore Kirsten Muhaw (pole vault), senior Theresa Horn (heptathlon), junior Damien Boham (400m), senior Chris Schneider (5000m), freshman Steven Morgan (110m hurdles), freshman Ronald D'Eliseo (400m hurdles) and sophomore Thomas Freid (javelin). The men's 4x400m relay was also a provisional qualifier.


Notes:

* O'Connor is one of 6 women's high jumpers to compete at the NCAA Championships for ESU, and one of 5 who have earned All-America honors.
* ESU's high jump coach, Karen (Way) Gaita, was a 4-time All-American and the 1991 DII outdoor champion.
* Shavanna Ross was a 2-time national qualifier and indoor All-American in 2001.
* Leslie Martin was a 2-time national qualifier and indoor All-American in 2007.
* Lynn Mayer was a 6-time All-American, earning certificates both indoors and outdoors in 2008, 2010 and 2011.
* Janelle Smith was a 4-time national qualifier from 2008-10.

* Berry is one of ESU's 4 national qualifiers in the men's high jump and is making his 2nd NCAA trip in the event after competing indoors this year.
* Mike Newhard was a 3-time qualifier and earned All-America status indoors in 2002 and 2003.
* Brad Fees was also an indoor qualifier in 2003.
* Sophomore Seth Bailey was an All-American with a 3rd-place finish indoors this year, and was also an outdoor qualifier as a freshman in 2013.

* Toth is ESU's 2nd national qualifier in the men's hammer and is making his 2nd NCAA trip in the event. He also competed indoors in the weight throw this year.
* Current assistant coach Paul Wagner was an All-American in 2009 and 2010.
