ESU Football Falls to Slippery Rock, 56-24

EAST STROUDSBURG - Shamar Greene ran for 186 yards and Teddy Blakeman had 119 rushing yards and three touchdowns, leading Slippery Rock to a 56-24 win over East Stroudsburg University on Saturday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

Slippery Rock (2-0, 1-0) ran for 456 yards on 78 carries in the PSAC opener for both schools.
 
ESU (1-1, 0-1), coming off a come-from-behind 43-35 win at LIU Post last Saturday, cut a 28-10 deficit to 28-17 on a 95-yard blocked field goal return by junior cornerback Teron Dobbs late in the first half, but Slippery Rock responded with 28 straight points to put the game out of reach.
 
Redshirt junior quarterback Matt Soltes was 20-for-47 for 297 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions for ESU. He also ran for 15 yards on eight carries. Redshirt sophomore tailback Robert Healy ran for 86 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
 
Redshirt senior defensive lineman Bryan Thomson had his 11th career blocked kick, extending his school record, on a 28-yard field goal attempt by Mike Wainauskis, which Dobbs returned for a TD with 3:54 left in the first half.

ESU got the ball back on a fumble recovery by redshirt senior defensive end Brandon Gattelli, but a Soltes pass was deflected, intercepted by Derrick Fulmore and returned for a 22-yard touchdown that gave Slippery Rock a 35-17 halftime lead.
 
SRU went 58 yards on four plays to open the second half, then capitalized on an ESU turnover to extend its lead to 49-17.
 
ESU opened the scoring on a 19-yard TD run by Healy to cap the Warriors' opening possession. Redshirt junior wide receiver Jon Schnaars hauled in a 14-yard TD pass from Soltes to close the scoring with 4:00 left.
 
Redshirt senior tight end Steven Jones had four catches for 101 yards and Schnaars had four catches for 80 yards to lead ESU's receivers. Healy had six catches for 54 yards after pulling in four passes for 103 yards and two TD's at LIU Post last week.
 
Redshirt senior safety Anthony Singlar led the Warriors with 17 tackles.

ESU (1-1, 0-1) travels to Edinboro to face the Fighting Scots (0-2, 0-1) next Saturday at 12 p.m. Edinboro has opened with a 38-24 loss at No. 16 Carson-Newman (Tenn.) and a 47-21 loss at Shippensburg and will play its home opener next weekend.

* ESU head coach Denny Douds (41st season as head coach, 49th at ESU overall) has a 245-172-3 career record.
* Douds has coached 420 career games - the most among active NCAA coaches. Douds ranks 3rd among active coaches, 2nd among active DII coaches, 3rd all-time among DII coaches and t-22nd in NCAA history with 245 career wins.
* Douds, a 1963 Slippery Rock graduate, falls to 3-9 in the 12th meeting against his alma mater. ESU had won the last two meetings (38-21 in 2008, 54-28 in 2009).
* Slippery Rock's George Mihalik gained his 178th career win, 4th among active DII coaches and 5th in PSAC history.
* Slippery Rock is 8-2 against ESU under Mihalik.
* Douds is 29-12 in 41 home openers since 1974.

* R-Jr. QB Matt Soltes had 312 yards total offense, his 14th game with 300+ yards in 20 career starts.
* Soltes (297 pass yards) moved into 4th at ESU with 6,547 career passing yards. He passed Matt Marshall (6,403 - 2007-10) and Jeremy Palm (6,391 - 1998-02).
* ESU's #3 spot in career passing yards is 6,661, held by Bret Comp (1989-92).

* R-So. TB Robert Healy had 15 carries for 86 yards and a TD, and 6 catches for 54 yards. He had 10 carries for 51 yards and 4 catches for 103 yards and 2 TD at LIU Post in the season opener.
* Healy is the first ESU player with 50+ rushing and receiving yards in consecutive games since Harold Strunk in 1977 (Cortland - 17 carries, 193 yards, 2 TD; 2 catches, 57 yards, TD ... Bloomsburg - 28 carries, 79 yards, 2 TD; 5 catches, 61 yards, TD).

* R-Sr. TE Steven Jones had his 2nd career 100-yard receiving game (4 catches, 101 yards). He had 4 catches, 144 yards and 3 TD at Cheyney in 2013.
* Jones went over 1,000 career receiving yards (63 catches, 1,046 yards, 15 TD).

* Jr. CB Teron Dobbs had his 11th career interception. He entered the week ranked 3rd among active DII players with 10 career interceptions. Dobbs had 2 interceptions in the season-opening win at LIU Post.
* Dobbs' 95-yard blocked field goal return was ESU's 3rd under Douds. The most recent was an 87-yard TD by Tyree Townes vs. Millersville in 2003.

* R-Sr. DL Bryan Thomson extended his ESU career record with his 11th blocked kick. He has blocked 7 PAT and 4 FG.

* Slippery Rocks' 456 rushing yards were a school record and the 3rd-most allowed by an ESU team under Douds. SRU's 78 rushing attempts are the most-ever against a team coached by Douds.
* SRU's Shamar Greene (186 yards) and Teddy Blakeman (119) are the 12th pair of teammates to run for 100+ yards against ESU since 1974. SRU's Ryan Lehmeier (229) and Demarcus Cleckley (109) did it in 2007.
