ESU Football Posts 69-7 Win at Cheyney

CHEYNEY - Redshirt senior quarterback Matt Soltes threw for 419 yards and seven touchdowns and redshirt senior wide receiver Jon Schnaars had 11 catches for 148 yards and three TD, leading East Stroudsburg University to a 69-7 win at Cheyney in PSAC East football on Saturday afternoon at O'Shields-Stevenson Stadium.

Soltes was 27-for-39 and gained 435 total yards one week after posting 594 passing yards, 616 total yards and nine TD in a 69-67 (5OT) loss vs. Shippensburg. Schnaars, DII's leading receiver with 51 catches, 754 yards and 11 TD through five games, set PSAC records for catches (20) and TD (7) last week.

Senior wide receiver Gerard Wendowski had five catches, 118 yards and a TD for his second straight game with 100+ receiving yards after notching 10 catches, 222 yards and two TD vs. Ship.

Senior wide receiver Joe Welk had three catches for 24 yards and two TD and redshirt junior tailback Robert Healy gained 119 yards from scrimmage with 10 carries for 66 yards and four catches for 53 yards.

Redshirt senior tailback Gerald Van De Cruz had 19 carries for 96 yards and three TD, the first two from the one-yard line.

ESU gained 583 total yards, including 348 in the first half.

The Warriors' defense held Cheyney to 188 yards on 53 plays and did not allow a touchdown. Cheyney's scoring play was a 55-yard fumble return for a TD by defensive lineman Joseph Bryant early in the second quarter.

ESU had a 4-1 turnover margin, getting interceptions from redshirt sophomore cornerback Wesley Pierce and redshirt sophomore middle linebacker Mike Wiand, along with two fumble recoveries.

Soltes was 19-for-27 for 276 yards and five TD in the first half, finishing the half with a 38-yard TD to redshirt sophomore wide receiver Tommy House on a tipped ball in the end zone.

He hit Wendowski for a 56-yard TD on a slant pass on his first completion of the third quarter, and hit Welk for a six-yard TD later in the period.

ESU led 41-7 at intermission. Soltes' first three TD passes went to Schnaars (17, 20 and four yards), and he later hit Welk for a 12-yard TD in the second quarter before the "hail mary" pass to House.

Soltes had his ninth career game with 400+ passing yards and 13th with 400+ total yards, extending both school records. He entered the week as the DII leader in passing (385.8 ypg), ranked second in total offense (415.6 ypg) and tied for second in pass TD (20).

Schnaars has 62 catches for 902 yards and 14 TD through six games. He has 37 career receiving TD, breaking a tie with Tim Strenfel (34) for second-most in school history.
