ESU Football Falls at Kutztown, 63-17

KUTZTOWN - Kutztown led 21-0 after the first quarter on its way to a 63-17 win over East Stroudsburg University in PSAC East football on Saturday afternoon.

Chad Barton was 26-for-36 for 321 yards, four touchdowns and one interception and Kutztown (4-4, 3-2) ran for 301 yards on 33 carries.

Redshirt senior quarterback Matt Soltes was 23-for-48 for 322 yards and one touchdown, and redshirt senior wide receiver Jon Schnaars had 10 catches for 147 yards and a TD for ESU (4-4, 3-2).

Soltes, the DII leader in total offense (400.0 ypg) entering the afternoon, became the fifth QB in DII history with 3,000 yards total offense in all four years of his career. Soltes entered the day with 2,800 total yards and had 298 yards on Saturday.

He joins ESU's Jimmy Terwilliger (2003-06), Delta State's Scott Eyster (2003-06), Southwest Baptist's Steven Gachette (2007-10) and Tusculum's Bo Cordell (2009-10, 12-13) as the only DII quarterbacks with 3,000 total yards in four seasons.

Soltes moved into 11th in DII history in career total offense (13,026).

Schnaars, DII's top receiver (10.1 rpg, 147.0 ypg, 16 TD) entering the weekend, became the third ESU receiver and 16th in PSAC history with 3,000 career receiving yards (3,013), joining Evan Prall (4,093 - 2003-06) and Tim Strenfel (3,696 - 2002-05).

Redshirt junior tailback Robert Healy gained 118 yards from scrimmage, with 17 carries for 67 yards and four catches for 51 yards. Senior wide receiver Joe Welk added four catches for 68 yards and junior fullback Sean Roth had three catches for 34 yards.

Terry Williams (seven carries, 143 yards, two TD) scored on a 98-yard TD run on Kutztown's first play from scrimmage. Barton had five carries for 60 yards and a TD, James Wah, Jr. had six carries for 45 yards and two TD and Darrell Scott had 15 carries for 53 yards for KU.

Kellen Williams had seven catches for 133 yards and two TD and Craig Reynolds had nine catches for 78 yards and a TD for the Golden Bears.

Kutztown led 21-10 at halftime after the Warriors scored 10 points in the second quarter, before pulling away for a 42-10 lead with 4:00 left in the third quarter.

ESU had two interceptions, by redshirt sophomore outside linebacker Sekou Jones in the second quarter and redshirt sophomore safety Maurice Jackson in the fourth quarter.

Kutztown recovered three ESU fumbles.

Redshirt freshman punter Sam O'Brien averaged 42.7 yards on seven punts and pinned Kutztown inside its five-yard line three times.
