Will Brown had 16 and East Stroudsburg University broke the game open with a 21-2 run early in the second half to post an 85-62 win vs. Le Moyne in its 2015-16 men's basketball season opener on Saturday at the College of Saint Rose.
Nwaniemeka, a preseason All-PSAC East selection and the 2014 PSAC Tournament MVP, was 7-for-13 from the field and 4-for-8 from the three-point line and added four assists for ESU (1-0).
Junior forward
Rasheed Moore, also on the preseason All-PSAC East team and a two-time All-PSAC East second team selection, added 14 points and eight rebounds and junior forward
Steve Harris had 13 points and seven boards for the Warriors.
Redshirt junior guard
Quindell Brice had nine points off the bench in his ESU debut and senior forward
Wes Cherry had six points, five rebounds and four steals.
Freshman guard
Najee Walls started in his ESU debut and had three points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals in 27 minutes as ESU replaces its All-America backcourt of
Matt Tobin and
Whis Grant.
Tanner Hyland scored 18 points and Daniel Kaigler and Qwadere Lovell both had 10 for Le Moyne (0-1).
ESU had a 21-16 advantage in turnovers and a 43-27 margin on the boards. The Warriors shot 46.3 percent from the field, 9-for-25 from the three-point line and 14-for-19 at the foul line.
ESU led 43-31 at halftime on a late three-pointer by Nwaniemeka, and stretched a 47-38 lead at the 17-minute mark to 68-40 with 10 minutes remaining.
The Warriors played Le Moyne for the first time since a victory in 1998-99 and improved to 7-8 in the all-time series. The Dolphins are in their first season under head coach Patrick Beilein, the son of former Le Moyne head coach and current Michigan head coach John Beilein.
The Warriors take on host Saint Rose on Sunday at 5 p.m.
