ESU Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep of Felician, Sets School Record for Runs in 29-1 Win

WILSON, N.C. - East Stroudsburg University set a school record for runs in a single game with a 29-1 victory in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader as the Warriors swept a three-game series from Felician this weekend in North Carolina.

ESU (3-0) won Friday's opener, 6-5, before taking both ends Saturday, 29-1 and 11-6. Felician was an NCAA Tournament team a year ago and was picked sixth in the NCBWA DII East Region preseason poll.
 
The 29 runs break a 60-year-old school record, set in a 27-0 win at Lincoln in 1955.

The Warriors led 20-0 after four innings in the nine-inning contest. They scored three runs in the first, four in the second, four in the third, nine in the fourth, four in the fifth and four in the sixth to lead 28-0 at that juncture.

ESU had 23 hits and drew nine walks from eight Felician pitchers.

Seven Warriors had multiple hits, seven had multiple RBI and 10 scored multiple runs. ESU had seven players combine for 11 extra-base hits.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Ian Allen threw 4.0 scoreless innings and had a huge game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double, three-run homer, five RBI and two runs.

In game two, ESU broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth inning of a seven-inning contest. Junior Brandon Holup (4.0 IP, 2 runs), an All-Region selection last spring, got the win with sophomore Tyler Eckman throwing 2.0 scoreless innings for the save.

For the weekend, ESU hit .365 with a .486 on-base percentage, collecting 42 hits, 26 walks and scoring 46 runs.

Redshirt junior 1B/OF Matt Walewski was 7-for-11 with three walks, three doubles, four RBI and six runs. Redshirt sophomore OF Casey Saverio was 6-for-14 with three walks, three doubles, four RBI and six runs from the leadoff spot.

Junior 1B/DH Dylan Tamecki was 5-for-12 with two walks, two doubles, 7 RBI and 4 runs, and Allen was 4-for-9 with five walks, one double, one home run, five RBI and three runs.

On the mound, senior Andrew Furber threw 5.2 scoreless innings of relief (nine strikeouts, four hits allowed) as ESU rallied for a 6-5 win in the opener on Friday.


Game 1 - W 29-1

ESU's historic output featured two four-hit games (Saverio and Allen), a five-RBI game from Allen and a five-run game from redshirt junior 3B Drew Hercik.

Saverio and Hercik both reached base five times at the top of the lineup. Saverio was 4-for-6 with a walk, two doubles, two RBI and four runs, and Hercik was 2-for-4 with three walks, a double, three RBI and five runs.

Walewski was 3-for-4 with three doubles, four RBI and four runs before being replaced by freshman OF Chase James, who was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs.

Tamecki was 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, four RBI and two runs and Allen was 4-for-5 with a double, home run, five RBI and two runs.

Freshman OF Christian Rishel entered in the fourth inning and was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs.

On the mound, Allen went 4.0 scoreless innings (4 hits, 3 strikeouts), followed by Eckman (2.0 IP, 0 runs, 0 hits, 4 strikeouts, 1 walk). Redshirt sophomore Marty Martens, freshman Derrick Jackson and freshman Joe Cominsky all worked one inning each.

Walewski had two-run doubles in both the first and second innings as ESU jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Tamecki contributed a three-run double in the third to push the lead to 11-0 before the Warriors sent 13 batters to the plate in a nine-run fourth inning.

Saverio had an RBI double, Hercik belted a two RBI double, Rishel had an RBI single and Allen contributed an RBI double in the frame.

Allen hit his first career home run, a three-run shot, in the fifth inning to make it 24-0. Junior catcher Ryan Richards had a two-run double in a four-run sixth that extended the score to 28-0, and redshirt junior pitcher Matt Festa had a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth.


Game 2 - W 11-6

The Warriors broke a 3-3 tie with a seven-run frame in the sixth to complete the series sweep.

ESU had just two hits in the inning, but drew five walks and took advantage of two passed balls and two errors to break the deadlock.

Junior 2B Nick Rabasco had an RBI single and Saverio drew a bases loaded walk in the second inning, and Saverio drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two-out single by redshirt sophomore 3B Jay Young in the third.

Walewski (2-for-3, two walks, two runs) and Rabasco (2-for-3, walk, RBI, two runs) had multiple-hit games. Saverio was 1-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and two runs, and Tamecki was 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs.

Holup went the first 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Redshirt junior Cody Klinger gave up one run in the fifth, then Eckman came in to get out a tough spot in the sixth, relieving sophomore Ben Bortz. Eckman got the final six outs and didn't allow a run to earn the save.
