Warriors Baseball Posts 19-6 Win in Game 2, Earning Split at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG - East Stroudsburg University pounded 20 hits and scored 15 runs in the final four innings, posting a 19-6 win over Shippensburg in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split in PSAC East baseball on Friday afternoon.

Shippensburg won the opener, 10-3, behind a six-run sixth inning. ESU turned the tables in game two, pushing a 4-0 lead to 11-0 with a seven-run fourth.

ESU (14-6, 5-5) and Shippensburg (10-14, 6-4) are slated to finish the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at ESU's Mitterling Field. (UPDATED: Postponed to Monday)

The Warriors' 19 runs in game two are their second-most in 129 games against Shippensburg all-time. The Warriors won a 21-15 affair at Ship in 1997.

The 19 runs are also tied for the most against a PSAC East school under eighth-year head coach John Kochmansky. ESU's 20 hits are the second-most against a divisional opponent in that time frame.

Sophomore OF Ian Allen was 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs a double and an inside-the-park home run in the nightcap.

Freshman OF Christian Rishel went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs, redshirt junior SS Drew Hercik was 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs and junior 2B Nick Rabasco was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs.

Nine of ESU's 20 hits went for extra bases, including eight doubles, as the Warriors got to seven different Shippensburg pitchers.

Game 1 - L 10-3

Jake Kennedy hit a three-run homer to cap Ship's six-run sixth inning and Marcus Shippey threw a complete game (4 hits, 10 strikeouts, 2 walks) for the Raiders.

ESU took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-out, two-RBI double by Allen. Ship tied it at 2-2 in the second on a two-run homer by Cody Ezolt, and took a 4-2 lead in the third on a two-RBI single by Jimmy Spanos.

ESU got one run back in the fourth on a two-out infield single by sophomore OF Ben Bortz, but the Warriors left two runners on base in the frame.

Neither side threatened again until the sixth, when Ship scored six runs on six hits.

Redshirt junior Matt Festa took the loss for ESU, throwing 5.2 innings.

Game 2 - W 19-6

It was 4-0 after three innings before ESU exploded for 15 more runs - seven in the fourth, four in the sixth and four in the seventh.

ESU struck first on a two-out RBI double by Hercik in the second, and added three more runs in the third with RBI singles by redshirt sophomore OF Casey Saverio and Allen, followed by a sacrifice fly by redshirt junior 1B Matt Walewski.

Freshman Joe Cominsky started and went 2.0 innings, followed by Bortz (2.0 IP, 2 runs), junior Joe DiGiovanni (2.0 IP, 3 runs) and senior Andrew Furber (1.0 IP, 1 run).

In the big fourth inning, run-scoring hits came from Rabasco (RBI double), redshirt sophomore 3B Jay Young (two-RBI double), junior 1B Dylan Tamecki (sacrifice fly), Rishel (RBI double) and Hercik (RBI single). ESU sent 11 batters to the plate and had six hits.

In the sixth, Allen hit a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single by Walewski. Rishel had an RBI double, freshman C Mike Sulcoski lifted a sacrifice fly and Rabasco had an RBI infield single.

Allen hit an inside-the-park, three-run homer to highlight the seventh inning. Rabasco later walked to plate a run.

Allen's homer was his fifth of the season and gave him a 4-for-6 day at the plate. He is hitting .441 (26-for-59) with three doubles, five homers, 26 RBI, 23 runs, a .570 on-base percentage and .746 slugging percentage through 20 games. On the mound, he is 3-1 with a 4.42 ERA and threw a no-hitter at Virginia State on March 8.
