ESU Basketball Hosts Mansfield Wednesday Night

EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior forward Allison Howard scored a season-high 24 points and freshman guard Noelle Powell added 16, leading East Stroudsburg University to a 79-65 win vs. Mansfield in PSAC East women's basketball on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Junior forward Madison Tamburini scored nine points, senior center Michelle Boggs had eight and senior guards Tyeca Reviere and Melissa Poderis both had seven assists for ESU (7-8, 5-6), which won for the sixth time in seven games.

Katie Fitzpatrick, the PSAC's fourth-leading scorer (16.7 ppg), had 17 points to lead Mansfield (3-11, 1-10). Brielle Kelly scored 14 points and Tianna Jackson had 12 for the Mounties.

ESU shot 45.2 percent (28-for-62) from the field and made seven three-pointers.

Howard scored 14 of her 24 points in the second half, including eight points early in the third quarter as the Warriors pulled away. ESU's top scorer with 15.9 points per game, Howard had her fifth career 20-point game and her first of the season. She scored a career-high 25 points at Mansfield as a freshman.

Powell, last week's PSAC East Freshman of the Week, was two points off her season-high. Poderis' seven assists were a career-best.

Mansfield led 22-19 at the end of the first quarter, but the Warriors turned it into a 43-32 halftime lead on the strength of a 24-10 edge in the second quarter. ESU scored the last four points of the first quarter, then opened the second quarter on a 16-2 stretch for a 20-2 run overall.

ESU, second in the PSAC in blocks (4.3 per game) entering the week, had a season-high 10 blocks as Mansfield shot 36.8 percent (25-for-68). Sophomore forward Rebecca Rutkowski, third in the conference in blocks (1.8), had four and Boggs (sixth at 1.6 per game) added three. The Warriors also had 10 steals and held a 21-17 edge in turnovers.

EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior guard Jamal Nwaniemeka scored a season-high 22 points and redshirt junior guard Quindell Brice had a career-high 16, leading East Stroudsburg University to its sixth straight win with a 102-62 victory vs. Mansfield in PSAC East men's basketball on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Redshirt senior guard Will Brown scored 12 points and junior forward Steve Harris added 12 points and nine rebounds for ESU (12-3, 8-3).

Freshman guard Najee Walls had five points, four rebounds and 10 assists in 20 minutes after ranking second in the PSAC and fourth among Division II freshmen in assists per game (5.8) entering the night.

ESU, the PSAC's top scoring team at 89.0 ppg, scored at least 85 points for the 10th time in 15 games and hit the 100-point mark for the fourth time - including the third in its last five PSAC contests.

Nwaniemeka had his 10th career game with at least 20 points. He had 13 points and Brice scored 10 in the first half as the Warriors led 47-22 at intermission.

Thomas Moore scored 20 points to lead Mansfield (3-13, 1-10).

ESU shot 50.6 percent (40-for-79) and hit nine three-pointers. The Warriors held Mansfield to 32.3 percent (20-for-62) overall and 4-for-18 from the three-point line while gathering 14 steals on 19 Mansfield turnovers.

Nwaniemeka (963) and Brown (944) are both closing in on the 1,000-point mark for their careers after junior forward Rasheed Moore hit the mark in an 87-60 win at No. 22-ranked West Chester on Saturday.

Senior forward Wes Cherry scored eight points, sophomore guard Ryan Krawczeniuk had five points, four rebounds and six assists and junior forward Sultan Aminu grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to highlight ESU's other contributors.

The Warriors host Kutztown (12-3, 9-2) in a PSAC East game on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Golden Bears fell 89-82 at Philadelphia University in a non-conference game on Wednesday night, ending a four-game winning streak.
