EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman
Irvin Zuzic fired in a go-ahead goal in the 60th minute, leading East Stroudsburg University to a 2-1 win over California (Pa.) in PSAC men's soccer on Saturday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The victory is the fourth in a row for the Warriors (5-3-1, 3-2-1 PSAC), and it was their first win over the Vulcans (5-3-1, 2-2-1 PSAC) since the 2010 season. Sophomore
Brandon Levano added a goal and an assist for ESU, while Zuzic's marker extended his point streak to four games.
California opened up the scoring in the 27th minute, with Nathan Angelo heading in a corner kick from Ahmad Awadalla. The Warriors, however, needed only 50 seconds to respond, with the home side earning a penalty kick and Levano converting the attempt for his fourth goal of the season. Three of those tallies have come on penalties, and Levano is a perfect 3-for-3 from the free spot.
The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the intermission, with ESU holding a 7-6 edge in shots.
Zuzic's go-ahead strike came after Levano sent in a cross from the left side. Zuzic now has goals in three of the past four contests, while Levano has at least one point in six of the last seven games.
The Warrior defense stepped up over the final half hour of play, preventing the Vulcans from registering any shots on goal to secure the win.
Junior midfielder
Christian Bukowski had a team-high four shots, and sophomore goalkeeper
Will Boerema made three saves in the victory.
ESU has now won four games in a row for the first time since starting the 2015 season with a 4-0 record. The program has not won five straight since the 2008 NCAA qualifying-squad had runs of five and six-consecutive victories en route to a 15-7 final record.
The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday night, traveling to Felician for a non-conference tilt scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
