Box Score

DINWIDDIE, Va. - Junior left-hander Ian Allen threw 7.0 innings to win his second straight start and redshirt junior outfielder Casey Saverio hit two home runs, leading East Stroudsburg University to a 14-1 win vs. California (Pa.) in non-conference baseball on Saturday.

ESU (5-0), ranked No. 25 in this week's NCBWA DII poll, stayed hot offensively (16 hits, 5 walks) after scoring 48 runs in a four-game sweep at Chowan last weekend as the Warriors scored in six of the game's nine innings.

Allen shut down an offense that returned most of the key contributors, including three preseason All-Region selections, from a group that hit .326 (5th in PSAC) with a .516 slugging percentage (4th in PSAC) last spring. He limited Cal to one run on six hits, struck out seven and didn't issue a walk.

Allen, a preseason All-America dual selection, improves to 2-0 this season and 9-2 in his career on the mound. He has a 1.64 ERA, allowing two runs in 11.0 innings, with 10 hits allowed, 16 strikeouts and no walks.

Cal (3-3) was listed No. 10 in this week's NCBWA DII Atlantic Region rankings, with ESU No. 3 in the region.

Saverio (2-for-4, 5 RBI, 2 runs) hit two home runs, matching his 2015 total, and redshirt junior SS Conner Crookham also went deep for the Warriors.

Six Warriors had at least two hits. Redshirt junior Robert Bennie was 3-for-6 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs in the leadoff spot and Crookham was 3-for-5 with his home run, two RBI and three runs in the No. 3 hole.

Allen and sophomore OF Christian Rishel were both 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs.

Crookham homered to give the Warriors the lead in the first, and after Cal tied it at 1-1 with a two-out run in the second, ESU scored three runs in the third to take control. Allen had an RBI double, Crookham an RBI single and redshirt senior 1B Matt Walewski had an RBI groundout after Bennie singled to start the frame.

Sophomore catcher Steven Zimmerman, Jr. singled and scored on a two-out double by Bennie for a 5-1 lead in the fourth.

The Warriors got three more in the fifth on Saverio's first homer, which followed two-out hits by Walewski and Rishel.

Saverio hit a solo homer in the seventh, and ESU put it away with five runs in the eighth on three hits, three walks and a hit batter.

Junior Ben Bortz and senior Joe DiGiovanni both threw scoreless innings in relief of Allen.

The Warriors play Post (Conn.) at 11 a.m. and Shepherd, which went 39-12 last year, at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

ESU is hitting .388 with a .479 on-base percentage and .635 slugging percentage through five games, scoring 62 runs on 66 hits, including 22 extra-base hits and nine home runs.
