Dylan Nace (141) and senior
Tyson Searer (285) both finished one win short of qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships, both placing fifth in their weight classes at the Super Region 1 tournament on Saturday at Mercyhurst University.
Nace, Searer and junior
Connor Maliff (133) all advanced from Friday's action into Saturday's championship rounds.
Maliff, unseeded at 133, finished in the top eight in the region after a 15-7 setback to No. 5 Kevin Kinyua (Mercyhurst) in the consolation quarterfinals.
At 141, Nace (No. 3 seed) opened his action on Saturday with a 15-3 major decision vs. No. 8 Thomas Nulty (Millersville) in the consolation quarters, his third win vs. Nulty this season. He previously won by fall at the PSAC Championships in December and by an 11-4 decision on February 4.
Nace dropped a 3-2 decision vs. No. 6 John Marotto (Gannon) in the consolation semifinal after previously posting a fall and sudden victory decision vs. Marotto this season.
Nace pinned No. 5 Karl Lightner (Shippensburg) in 6:32 in the fifth/sixth place match.
Nace finishes his season with a 22-4 record, going unbeaten (13-0) in duals, and had a 15-3 mark vs. DII competition.
At 285, Searer (No. 2 seed) wrestled into a true-fourth place match but dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 5 Logan Bowman (Wheeling Jesuit) to finish fifth.
Searer, a 2013 national qualifier at 197 pounds as a freshman, is ESU's first four-time regional placewinner in its seventh season in DII (since 2010).
Searer opened his Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals with a fall (49 seconds) vs. No. 6 David Wuestner (Millersville), improving to 3-0 vs. Wuestner in his career.
He was pinned with one second left in the second period in his consolation semifinal match-up vs. No. 1 seed D.J. Sims (UPJ), ranked No. 2 nationally, after Sims was upended by No. 4 seed Ryan Appleby (Kutztown) by a 7-6 decision in the semifinals.
Searer advanced in the fifth/sixth place match by medical forfeit vs. No. 7 James Louison (LIU Post) to set up a bout vs. Bowman for a national qualifying spot. Searer won a 4-3 decision vs. Bowman in a dual on January 31 but was on the wrong end of Saturday's 4-0 verdict.
Searer finishes his season with a 19-9 record and his ESU career at 78-39, tied for the fourth-most wins in the program since 2000. His 46-9 career dual record, spanning 197 pounds (2013-14) and 285 pounds (2015-16) is among ESU's best in the last 30 seasons.
ESU finished ninth of 15 schools with 33 points. Pitt-Johnstown, ranked No. 3 nationally, won the team title with 155.5 points, knocking off DII No. 1-ranked Notre Dame (Ohio), with 143. Host Mercyhurst was third (109), Wheeling Jesuit fourth (85) and Kutztown fifth (79.5).
