ESU Football Falls at Shippensburg, 31-14

SHIPPENSBURG - Ryan Zapoticky threw three touchdown passes and Shippensburg scored the final 28 points, giving the Red Raiders a 31-14 win over East Stroudsburg University in the PSAC East football opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon at Seth Grove Stadium.

Zapoticky threw a pair of TD passes to Erik Kerns late in the second quarter, a 41-yarder with 4:16 left and a 34-yarder with 41 seconds remaining, to give Ship (3-1, 1-0) a 17-14 lead at halftime, and directed two scoring drives in the second half.

ESU redshirt senior tailback Robert Healy, the NCAA Division II leader in rushing (184.0 ypg) and yards from scrimmage (240.7 ypg) through three weeks, gained 124 yards (15 carries, 76 yards; 5 catches, 48 yards) for the Warriors (2-2, 0-1).

ESU won 34-31 at Mercyhurst last week behind a 292-yard effort (256 rushing, 36 receiving) by Healy.

Redshirt senior quarterback Bruce Campbell was 12-for-32 for 200 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Junior wide receiver Tim Wilson had two catches for 110 yards and a TD, scoring from 53 yards on the fourth play of the game and catching a 57-yarder to set up a touchdown, an eight-yard pass from Campbell to freshman wide receiver Javier Buffalo that gave the Warriors a 14-3 lead with 7:49 left in the second quarter.

Zapoticky threw a 40-yard TD pass to Jordan Harro to extend Shippensburg's lead to 24-14 with 7:49 left in the third quarter, and Cole Chiappialle punched in a one-yard touchdown to cap a nine play, 67-yard drive for a 31-14 lead with 13:50 remaining in the game.

Zapoticky was 19-for-27 for 279 yards, three TD and an interception and ran for 17 yards for Shippensburg, which gained 450 yards on 75 plays. Kerns had three catches for 84 yards and two TD and Mike Brown had four catches for 48 yards. Five Ship receivers had a catch of at least 20 yards.

Justin Pyle had 15 carries for 90 yards and Chiappialle had 16 carries for 47 yards to pace Ship's ground game.

ESU redshirt sophomore punter Sam O'Brien, second in the PSAC in punting average (40.3) entering the week, averaged 46.1 yards on eight punts.

Redshirt junior linebacker Mike Wiand had a first-quarter interception for the Warriors, who had five sacks - one each by Wiand, redshirt junior linebacker Sekou Jones, redshirt freshman safety Justin Johnson and redshirt senior defensive end Ahmad McFarland, along with an assisted sack by redshirt junior defensive lineman Marc Ranaudo and redshirt freshman Justin Barat.

ESU hosts Cheyney next Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
