Box Score
CALDWELL, N.J. – East Stroudsburg University scored three goals in the second half, including the game-winner by junior midfielder
Cory Binagia in the 67th minute, to rally for a 3-2 victory at Caldwell on Tuesday afternoon.
Binagia's goal, the first of his collegiate career, broke a 2-2 tie and sealed a third-straight victory for the Warriors (4-3-1). It was also the program's first win over the Cougars (4-4-1) in six tries dating back to a 4-1 ESU victory on Oct. 16, 2010.
Senior midfielder
Andrew McGinley and junior midfielder
Christian Bukowski scored the other two goals for the Warriors, who trailed 1-0 at halftime. Caldwell managed three shots in the final 10 minutes of play in its search for an equalizer, including one with only 19 seconds remaining on the clock, but none of the attempts were on target.
The Cougars were actually held without a shot until the closing seconds of the first half, but they still took a 1-0 lead into the intermission through an ESU own goal 8:31 into the contest. The Warriors ended the opening 45 minutes with a 7-1 advantage in shots.
ESU turned its shot advantage into a goal in the 52nd minute, when McGinley took a pass from freshman forward
Irvin Zuzic and fired a shot into the right-hand side of the goal for his third strike in as many games.
The reigning co-PSAC Athlete of the Week now has 10 career collegiate goals. Zuzic, meanwhile, extended his point streak to three games, and he has two goals and two assists during that span.
Less than three minutes after McGinley's goal, Bukowski put the Warriors in front with his team-leading sixth marker of the season, beating Cougar goalie Anthony Tirri on a rebound after freshman midfielder
Marcus Torgersson's initial attempt was stopped. Bukowski also has a three-game point streak (3 G, 2 A), and he has 15 points through ESU's first eight contests in 2016 (6 G, 3 A).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Will Boerema made a pair of stops in the minutes following Bukowski's goal, but Caldwell leveled up the score at 2-2 on a free kick strike from Sam Odell in the 66th minute.
The tie did not last long. Only 30 seconds after Odell's marker, Binagia took a chip from Torgersson and beat Cougar goalie Anthony Tirri in the 67th minute. That marked the first goal and point for Binagia in his 27th career game as a Warrior, while Torgersson earned his second assist of the contest on the play.
Boerema ended the game with three saves for ESU, and Bukowski added a team-high four shots. Shots as a whole were 11-8 in favor of the Warriors.
ESU returns to PSAC competition on Saturday, welcoming California (Pa.) to Eiler-Martin Stadium for a matchup set to begin at 12 p.m.
