SHIPPENSBURG - Senior forward
Rasheed Moore scored 25 points and redshirt sophomore forward
Chris Bing had career-highs with 15 points and 16 rebounds, but Justin McCarthur's game-tying three-pointer sent the game to overtime and No. 8-ranked Shippensburg remained unbeaten with an 86-82 (OT) win over East Stroudsburg University in PSAC East men's basketball on Wednesday night at Heiges Field House.
McCarthur's three with 25 seconds left forced overtime, and he scored seven of Ship's 17 points in the extra session as the Raiders (16-0, 12-0) continued the PSAC's best unbeaten start since ESU went 20-0 to open the 2013-14 PSAC championship season. Ship is one of six unbeaten teams left in NCAA Division II.
Moore had his seventh 20-point game in his last 11 and the 15th of his career, moving into sixth at ESU with 1,450 career points and passing Russ Hopewell (1,446 - 1958-62). He teamed with Bing for 40 points in a match-up of two of the top frontcourts in the PSAC.
Dustin Sleva, fifth in the PSAC in scoring (20.7 ppg) and first in rebounding (10.9 rpg), had 18 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out in OT for Shippensburg. Freshman John Castello added 11 points and 12 boards.
Antonio Kellem had 17 points and eight rebounds and Abe Massaley added 13 points and five boards as Ship put all five starters in double figures.
Redshirt senior guard
Quindell Brice had 11 points for ESU (12-5, 10-2 PSAC), putting the Warriors ahead 69-66 with a floater with 47 seconds left in regulation before McCarthur tied it at the other end.
Moore got a look at a three-pointer with five seconds left, but it wouldn't go, sending the game to OT.
Ship shot 3-for-3 from the field, 2-for-2 from the three-point line and 9-for-12 at the foul line without turning it over in the extra session.
Moore scored five of ESU's 13 points in overtime, tying the game at 74-74 and pulling ESU within 77-76 with three minutes left after a three by Kellem.
McCarthur hit two at the line, followed by one-of-two by Kellem, before junior guard
Ryan Krawczeniuk (8 points) hit three free throws after being fouled and got ESU back within one (80-79) at the 1:23 mark.
After Sleva made two, Brice hit a jumper to make it 82-81 with 1:02 remaining. Massaley converted a driving layup for a big bucket for Ship, Brice made one-of-two and McCarthur split a pair for an 85-82 Ship lead with 22 seconds left.
Sophomore guard
Kitt Najee Walls (6 points, 3 assists) was just short on a three, and McCarthur rebounded, was fouled and again split a pair of free throws for the final margin. McCarthur hit the first field goal of OT, a three 30 seconds in.
Ship, which hadn't trailed by more than six in its first 15 games, found itself down 11 (53-42) after a jumper by Moore with 13:16 remaining.
ESU led by 10 (57-47) on a layup by Bing with 11:15 showing, but Ship pulled within six at the 10-minute mark. A three by McCarthur made it 59-55 with 7:30 remaining, and after ESU stretched its lead back to seven (63-56) after four free throws by Moore, Ship climbed back and got within two (65-63) on a three by Sleva with 3:20 left.
Sleva split a pair of free throws on Ship's next trip to close to 65-64 with 2:56 remaining. Brice scored ESU's last four of regulation, including a layup at the 2:40 mark, followed by a bucket by Castello to get Ship back within one with 2:21 left and set up the closing minute.
The Warriors held a 37-36 halftime advantage after scoring the final seven points of the half, capped by a three by sophomore guard
Nick Giordano, as Ship trailed at intermission for just the third time this season.
In a match-up of the two top scoring teams in the PSAC - ESU averaging 88.6 ppg and Ship checking in at 86.7 ppg - neither team cracked 40 in either half.
Ship shot 40.9 percent (27-for-66) overall, 11-for-32 from three and 21-for-31 at the line with 13 turnovers, while ESU shot 39.7 percent (29-for-73), 7-for-20 from three and 17-for-22 at the line with 11 turnovers.
ESU was 6-for-11 from long distance in the first half.
Ship, third in the PSAC in rebounding (+6.7 rpg), had a 50-46 edge on the glass.
ESU travels to Bloomsburg (9-7, 5-7) for a 1 p.m. tip on Saturday at Nelson Fieldhouse. The Huskies fell 98-92 at Kutztown on Wednesday night.
Ship holds a two-game lead in the PSAC East standings, followed by ESU and Kutztown (14-2 overall) at 10-2 and then back to West Chester at 6-6.
