ESU Men’s Basketball Falls at Lock Haven, 89-82

LOCK HAVEN - Amir Hinton had 26 points and 11 rebounds and Lock Haven outscored East Stroudsburg University 16-7 down the stretch as the Warriors fell 89-82 in PSAC East men's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse.

Senior forward Rasheed Moore had 19 points and seven rebounds and moved into ESU's career top five in both  categories for the Warriors (14-6, 12-3), who had won two straight and 11 of their last 13 overall but dropped the second-half opener of their PSAC East schedule.

Sophomore guard Kitt Najee Walls scored 15 points, junior guard Ryan Krawczeniuk had 13, redshirt sophomore forward Chris Bing had 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double and junior forward Ralik Wise had eight points and seven rebounds for ESU.

Hinton, a redshirt freshman guard who is tied for second in the PSAC in scoring (23.2 ppg), scored 13 points in each half for Lock Haven (10-9, 6-9), which had dropped three of its last four. Cole Renninger scored 16 points, Jihad Barnes had 15 and Tarojae Brake added 11 for LHU.

ESU won the first meeting this season, 115-78, on January 3 at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors had won six straight in the series.

ESU led 53-46 at halftime, scoring the last five points including a closing three-pointer by Moore, after leading by as many as nine in the opening 20 minutes.

ESU maintained a seven-point lead at the 16-minute mark before an 8-1 LHU run tied the game at 61-61 with 13:57 left.  The Warriors pushed their edge back to five (68-63) with five straight points by Krawczeniuk, but LHU managed to tie it at 71-71 on a layup by Craig Slade (7 points) to help set up the finish.

A jumper by Moore gave the Warriors a 75-73 lead with 5:12 left before a 7-0 LHU run, which included four points by Barnes and a jumper by Renninger, for an 80-75 margin with 2:34 remaining.

Walls hit a jumper, Renninger had a putback and Walls made a three to get the Warriors within 82-80 at the 1:30 mark, but LHU outscored ESU 7-2 from the line in the final 90 seconds.

ESU shot 54.3 percent (19-for-35) in the first half for its sixth 50-point half of the season, but just 25.0 percent (9-for-36) in the second half for a 39.4 percent mark overall. The Warriors were 7-for-26 from the three-point line.

Lock Haven shot 50 percent (31-for-62) overall and 7-for-12 from long distance, including 7-for-8 in the first half.

Moore moves into fifth at ESU in both points (1,495) and rebounds (709) and also had a career-high four blocks.

He passed Keith Fisher (1,483 - 1987-91) on ESU's scoring list, and the late Todd Painton (703 - 1988-92) on the rebounding list.

Moore, Jonathan Roberts (school records for both points and rebounds) and Earle Greer are the only Warriors ranked in the top five in both categories at ESU.

ESU falls to third in the PSAC East behind Shippensburg (18-1, 14-1), which fell 82-65 at Millersville for its first loss of the season, and Kutztown (16-2, 12-2), which had a bye on Saturday.

The Warriors host Cheyney on Wednesday (8 p.m.) and Millersville on Saturday (3 p.m.) in a pair of home games next week at Koehler Fieldhouse.
