WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Fresh off a thrilling penalty kick advancement out of the semifinals against top-seeded West Chester, No. 4 East Stroudsburg University will take on No. 2 Gannon in the PSAC Championship game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The contest will take place at West Chester, with the Warriors (13-3-2) looking for their 20th conference title in program history and their first since 2007.
ESU and West Chester played to a 0-0 draw, but the Warriors extended their postseason run after advancing 5-4 on penalty kicks. Junior midfielder
Brandon Levano, junior midfielder
Jo Panuccio, senior midfielder
Christian Bukowski, sophomore back
Mateo Laredo-Fernandez and junior forward
Eddy Enowbi converted from the spot, and junior
Steven Robak came off the bench to make two big saves in goal.
The Golden Knights (11-6-1) are searching for their first PSAC title since joining the league in 2008. They knocked off No. 3 Millersville by a 2-0 final in Friday's semifinal round.
This will be the second postseason meeting between the two teams, with the first a 1-0 win for Gannon during the 1989 NCAA Division II tournament. The Golden Knights also came out on top by a tight 1-0 margin in this year's regular season meeting at Gannon on Oct. 8. ESU held an 11-10 advantage in shots, but a 20th minute strike by Eduardo de Bonis Encinoso proved to be the only goal in the contest.
The Warriors have not lost since that setback, going 7-0-1 in the following eight games and outscoring opponents by a 20-2 margin.
Enowbi has been the main offensive threat during the run, totaling six goals and one assist for a team-high 13 points. He leads ESU with 20 points (9 G, 2 A) overall on the year, and he is one of four players to start all 18 games, joining Levano, junior goalkeeper
Will Boerema and senior back
Keelby Espinola.
Bukowski has also come on strong in the past eight games, ranking second behind Enowbi with nine points (2 G, 5 A) after totaling two points through his first nine appearances. A 2016 first team All-PSAC and first team D2CCA All-Region performer, he is ESU's active leader with 58 points (19 G, 20 A).
Boerema made three saves in Friday's semifinal matchup to secure his sixth shutout in the last seven games. He has contributed to eight clean sheets overall on the year while registering 45 saves, a .750 save percentage and a 0.82 goals-against average (second among PSAC goalies).
Mathias Krigbaum and Srdjan Dujkovic had the goals in Gannon's 2-0 semifinal victory. Krigbaum leads the Golden Knights with 20 points (9 G, 2 A) overall, while de Bonis Encinoso follows with 16 points (7 G, 2 A).
ESU advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 home win over No. 5 Mercyhurst on Tuesday. Espinola, Enowbi and sophomore forward
Marcus Torgersson supplied the goals in that contest. The Warriors are in the PSAC final for the first time since tying Shippensburg 1-1 and falling 3-2 on PK's in 2010. With a win on Sunday, they will tie Lock Haven for the most conference titles among PSAC schools.
Gannon qualified for the PSAC tournament for the third time since joining the league, and this is the first appearance for the Golden Knights in a PSAC championship game.
ESU is looking to end a six-game losing streak in the series. The Warriors' last win over Gannon was a 2-1 road triumph in 2011.
