Warriors Hold off California (Pa.), 108-97, Remain Unbeaten at 6-0 (4-0 PSAC), Top 100 Points for School Record 4th Straight Game

EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University finished the game on a 13-5 run after California (Pa.) cut a 19-point second-half lead to three points with just over three minutes left, as the Warriors improved to 6-0 (4-0 PSAC) with a 108-97 win in PSAC men's basketball on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Redshirt senior forward Steve Harris tied his career-high with 22 points, junior guard Nick Giordano and sophomore forward Kobi Nwandu had 18 points each and redshirt junior guard Jakwan Jones set a career-high with 15 for the Warriors.

ESU, which is averaging 107.7 points per game in its unbeaten start, set school records for consecutive games with 90+ points (6) and 100+ points (4). The Warriors have scored at least 99 points in all six outings this winter.

Terry Davis, Jr. scored 26 points, Cordell Smith had 20 points, eight assists and six steals, Isaiah Lewis had 15 points and eight assists and Philip Alexander added 15 points for California (5-3, 2-2).

ESU (107.6 ppg) and Cal (89.6 ppg) entered as the top two scoring teams in the PSAC, and the Warriors led 59-47 at the half despite the Vulcans scoring the final eight points before intermission.

ESU led by as many as 19 points (75-56 with 12:52 left) in the second half, and by double figures until 8-2 and 6-0 runs pulled Cal within 90-82 with 5:19 remaining.

Another stretch got the Vulcans within three (95-92) on a three-pointer by Davis with 3:06 remaining before the Warriors regained control.

Harris scored the first five points in the closing 13-5 spurt, with a layup assisted by junior guard Kitt Najee Walls, and a dunk assisted by Jones, for a 99-92 lead with 2:30 left.

Cal turned it over on three straight possessions and the Warriors took advantage at the other end. Harris made one-of-two at the line, Nwandu grabbed an offensive rebound and Giordano buried a jump shot for a 102-92 lead, and after a deadball turnover, Nwandu scored to make it a 12-point game with 1:35 remaining.

Jones scored ESU's last four points, a putback with 47 seconds left and two free throws.

Nwandu scored nine of ESU's first 14 points of the second half, which had a stagnant start after the teams combined for 106 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Harris had his third career 20-point game and second of the season, going 7-for-9 from the field and 8-for-11 from the foul line. He leads ESU with 16.0 points per game and is shooting 68.5 percent (37-for-54) through six games.

ESU had a 20-14 advantage in turnovers with 10 steals, and leads the PSAC in both categories at +10 in turnover margin with 14 steals per game.

The Warriors shot 52.8 percent (38-for-72), made 12 three-pointers and were 20-for-25 at the foul line. Freshman guard Marc Rodriguez (9 points) hit three three's in the first half.

Cal shot 56.3 percent (40-for-71) overall and 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from long distance, but just 7-for-12 at the line.

ESU had six blocked shots, a season-high, led by Harris (3) and Nwandu (2).

The Warriors previously scored 100+ points in three straight games in 1970-71 and again last season. They hit the 90-point mark in five straight games in 1970-71, 1993-94 and last year.

ESU travels to Molloy (2-6) for a non-conference game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Lions are coming off a 93-90 (2OT) win at UDC on Saturday.
