ESU Men’s Basketball Falls Late at West Chester, 100-92

WEST CHESTER - Sophomores Malik Jackson and Jackson Hyland scored 27 points each and West Chester finished the game on a 17-1 run in the last 5:07, rallying the Golden Rams past East Stroudsburg University, 100-92, in PSAC East men's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Hollinger Field House.

Junior guard Ryan Krawczeniuk scored 17 points and senior forward Rasheed Moore had 16 to lead five players in double figures for ESU (16-7, 14-4 PSAC), which led 56-39 at halftime and by 19 early in the second half.

The Warriors maintained a 91-83 edge after a three-point play by Krawczeniuk with 5:13 left before the closing stretch by West Chester (11-12, 9-9), which improved to 7-2 at home vs. PSAC schools this winter.

Jackson, fifth in the PSAC in scoring (20.0 ppg), had 27 points, five rebounds and five assists, netting 15 points in the first half. Hyland (27 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals) had 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in the second half.

Both players missed ESU's 98-82 win vs. West Chester at Koehler Fieldhouse on January 9.

Redshirt junior forward Steven Stoney scored 13 points, sophomore guard Nick Giordano had 12, redshirt sophomore forward Chris Bing scored 11, redshirt senior guard Quindell Brice had nine and redshirt sophomore guard Jakwan Jones had seven points and six assists for ESU.

The Warriors shot 14-for-26 from the three-point line, including 10-for-16 in the first half to open their 17-point lead. Krawczeniuk had 14 points (4-for-5 from 3) and Moore and Stoney scored 13 each in the opening period.

ESU led 76-62 after a three by Moore with 12:16 left before WCU posted a 12-0 run to pull within two (76-74) with 9:43 left to set up the finish.

Giordano hit a pair of three's, the second giving ESU an 88-81 edge, and Krawczeniuk's three-point play made it 91-83.

Jackson scored five straight and Hyland had a three-point play to tie the game at 91-all at the 1:55 mark.

Bing split a pair of free throws for a 92-91 lead with 1:41 left, but WCU took the lead for good on a bucket by Tim Toro six seconds later. After the Warriors missed a jumper, Hyland hit a three near the end of the shot clock to put the Golden Rams up 96-92 with a minute left.

West Chester shot 59.4 percent (41-for-69) overall, 8-for-19 from three and 10-for-15 at the foul line. WCU had a 61.5 percent mark (24-for-39) from the field in the second half.

WCU had a 45-26 rebounding advantage and posted a 20-8 margin in second chance points.

ESU had a 19-13 edge in turnovers and 24-12 ledger in points off turnovers.

The Warriors entered 15-3 vs. West Chester since the start of the 2009-10 season. ESU (152 wins) and WCU (128) rank first and second in the PSAC East in total wins from 2009-10 through 2015-16, with the Warriors 96-36 (.727) vs. PSAC schools and WCU 83-49 (.629).

ESU, which had won four of its previous five, travels to Kutztown (20-2, 16-2) on Wednesday night. KU is ranked No. 9 in this week's NABC Division II poll and won the first meeting with ESU, 92-87, on January 11 at Koehler Fieldhouse after the Warriors erased all but one point of a 25-point second-half deficit.

The Warriors are guaranteed at least the No. 3 seed in the PSAC East in the upcoming PSAC Tournament, which opens February 27. They trail Shippensburg (21-2, 17-2) by 2.5 games and Kutztown by 2 games for the division title with four games remaining.
