No. 16 Shippensburg Holds Off ESU Men’s Basketball, 67-59

EAST STROUDSBURG - Dustin Sleva had 24 points and 11 rebounds, including eight of No. 16-ranked Shippensburg's final 13 points, as the Raiders held off East Stroudsburg University, 67-59, in PSAC East men's basketball on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Senior forward Rasheed Moore had 17 points and six rebounds and redshirt senior guard Quindell Brice had 11 points and six boards on Senior Night for ESU (17-9, 15-6) which pulled within four multiple times in the final 10 minutes but fell to 0-5 vs. nationally-ranked teams this season.

Redshirt sophomore forward Chris Bing added 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double and fourth of the season for the Warriors.

Sleva, fourth in the PSAC in scoring (21.6 ppg) and first in rebounding (11.2 rpg), helped Shippensburg (23-3, 19-3) close its regular season with a win heading into the PSAC Tournament. Ship is a half-game behind Kutztown (23-2, 19-2) in the PSAC East with Kutztown finishing its regular season on Saturday at West Chester.

Kutztown will be the  No. 1 seed, Shippensburg the No. 2 seed and ESU the No. 3 seed in the PSAC East entering the PSAC Tournament. The Warriors will play a first-round home game vs. the No. 6 seed (to be determined) on Monday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse and would travel to Ship for the quarterfinals on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) if they advance.

John Castello had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Atonio Kellem notched 10 points for Ship, which overcame a tough shooting night from its backcourt of Abe Massaley (8 points, 2-for-11, 5 turnovers) and Justin McCarthur (7 points, 1-for-10, 5 turnovers). McCarthur scored 24 points and Massaley had 13 in Ship's 86-82 (OT) home win vs. ESU on Jan. 18.

Sophomore guard Kitt Najee Walls had seven points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals for ESU, giving him 250 assists in his career.

Moore surpassed the 1,600-point mark (1,603) for his career in his final regular season appearance at Koehler Fieldhouse. Brice scored in double figures for the 31st time in 53 games for the Warriors over the last two years.

In a match-up of two of the top three scoring teams in the PSAC (ESU 89.8 ppg, Ship 85.2 ppg), Shippensburg's No. 2-ranked field goal defense held ESU to 35.4 percent (23-for-65) and 2-for-17 from the three-point line.

Ship shot 43.4 percent (23-for-53) and 8-for-23 from long distance. The Raiders held a 39-36 rebounding advantage, while ESU had a 15-10 margin in turnovers.

Shippensburg led through most of the first half, using a 12-0 run to take a 15-6 lead on the second three of the game by Sleva at the 12:13 mark. The Warriors responded with the next eight to keep it close, and the Ship lead settled in at three (27-24) at intermission.

Moore scored nine of ESU's first 11 points in the second half and the Warriors pulled even (33-33) on a three by Moore at the 16:30 mark, but they wouldn't take the lead.

Kellem and Castello hit three-pointers to bookend an 8-0 run that gave Ship a 43-35 lead with 12:30 remaining. ESU scored the next four, bu the Raiders led by four to nine points for the remainder of the contest.

Moore's three-point play brought ESU within five (60-55) with 4:27 left, and freshman forward Kobi Nwandu made 1-of-2 free throws to make it 60-56 with 3:18 left.

Sleva scored a pair of big baskets, a jumper for a 63-57 lead with 1:43 left and a putback for a 65-59 lead with 45 seconds to go after ESU junior guard Ryan Krawczeniuk had a steal and made two free throws to get the Warriors back within four.

Sleva (11-for-17) and Castello (5-for-8) finished 16-for-25 from the floor for Shippensburg, while the rest of the Raiders were 7-for-28.

Moore was 7-for-14 and Bing was 5-for-8 from the field to lead ESU.

The Warriors finish the regular season on Saturday at Mansfield, then host their PSAC Tournament first round game on Monday at 7 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse
