ESU Men’s Basketball Falls at Mansfield, 86-81, Hosts Lock Haven in PSAC Tournament 1st Round Monday (7 p.m.)

MANSFIELD - Senior forward Rasheed Moore had 21 points and nine rebounds and junior guard Ryan Krawczeniuk scored 13 of his 18 in the second half, but East Stroudsburg University fell 86-81 at Mansfield in PSAC East men's basketball in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.

ESU (17-10, 15-7) trailed by 23 late in the first half and 19 at halftime before rallying to pull within two with five minutes left, but Mansfield (11-15, 8-14) held on to finish its season with a win.

ESU, the No. 3 seed in the PSAC East, will host No. 6 seed Lock Haven in the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Monday at 7 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Sophomore guard Kitt Najee Walls had 11 points and six assists, redshirt senior guard Quindell Brice scored all 10 of his points late in the second half, freshman guard Montrel Morgan scored nine points and redshirt sophomore forward Chris Bing had eight points for ESU.

Malik Carter (25 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks), Matt Tamanosky (21 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) and Da'Quan Jones (17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) and Cedrick Powell (10 points, 6 assists, 4 steals) combined for 73 of Mansfield's 86 points. Jahyde Gariner added eight points, six rebounds and six blocks.

The Mounties opened the game on an 11-0 run, led 22-5 at the 10-minute mark and built a 37-14 lead with 3:35 remaining in the first half. Moore scored ESU's final seven points of the first half, including a three at the buzzer, but Mansfield led 45-26 at halftime.

ESU outscored MU 9-5 in the first four minutes of the second half, with Moore scoring seven, to maintain contact with the Mounties and then used a 6-0 stretch to close within 54-43 with 12:41 left.

The Warriors pulled within 10 (64-54) on two free throws by Walls with7:46 left. A three by Krawczeniuk made it eight (65-57), Morgan converted a layup and Brice scored ESU's next 10 points, including two three's in a 20-second span to make it 67-65 with 5:04 remaining.

A three-point play and a three-pointer by Powell gave Mansfield a six-point edge (75-69) with 3:05 play. ESU managed to pull back within two in the final minute, getting a three from Moore with 1:10 left and a triple by Krawczeniuk to close to 81-79 with 37.0 seconds left, but Mansfield was 4-for-6 at the free throw line down the stretch to hold on.

Moore had his 10th 20-point game of the season and the 18th of his career for the Warriors, including three three's to match his career-high.

Krawczeniuk's 18 points tied his career-high which he set at Cheyney on December 30.

Mansfield shot 61.5 percent (32-for-52) from the field, including 12-for-20 in the second half, made six three-pointers and was 6-for-14 at the foul line.

ESU shot 47.6 percent (30-for-63), including a 20-for-34 mark in the second half. The Warriors were 11-for-29 from long distance and 10-for-16 at the foul line.

ESU held a 34-30 rebounding advantage, while Mansfield had a 13-12 edge in turnovers.

ESU split its season series with Lock Haven (13-13, 9-13), winning 115-78 at home on Jan. 3 and falling 89-82 on the road on Jan. 28. LHU fell at Bloomsburg, 82-79, on Saturday.

The Warriors topped LHU, 82-59, in the first round of the PSAC Tournament last season. ESU is 11-5 in PSAC Tournament games since the 2009-10 season, including a perfect 7-0 mark in its opening round game (first round or quarterfinals). The Warriors have won three PSAC championships in school history, including two in the last five years (2012, 2014).
