SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Jo Panuccio scored the game-winning goal with 1:04 remaining in double overtime to complete a 4-3 come-from-behind victory for East Stroudsburg University at Shippensburg on Wednesday.
The Warriors (4-2-1, 2-2 PSAC) trailed 3-1 with less than 30 minutes remaining in regulation. Senior
James McMahon scored his second goal in as many games in the 72nd minute, and senior
Keelby Espinola sent the contest into overtime on his first goal of the season with 1:30 left on the clock.
Panuccio's goal was a blast into the left corner off a free kick just outside the box. Freshman
Anton Lysell also scored for ESU, which had a 29-11 advantage in shots overall.
The Raiders (3-4-2, 1-2 PSAC) opened up the scoring 7:22 into the first half, and after Lysell equalized just over five minutes prior to the intermission, the home side regained the advantage with goals in the 59th and 66th minutes.
McMahon pulled the Warriors back within one after he deposited the rebound off a shot by sophomore forward
Marcus Torgersson past Shippensburg goalie Matt Harder.
Espinola's goal also came on a scramble after a rebound. The initial effort by redshirt sophomore midfielder
Ahmad Awadalla was tipped off the crossbar, and Espinola pounded the ball into the net after it bounced back into the field of play.
ESU had three of the game's four shots in the first overtime period. The Raiders held a 3-1 edge in the second OT session prior to Panuccio's winner.
The Warriors earned their first double-overtime victory since Sept. 10, 2012 against Dominican, and they rallied from a two-goal deficit for the first time since a 3-2 win at Shippensburg during the 2003 season.
Panuccio had a game-high five shots; the goal was his second of the season. Patrick Luebben, Colin Marks and Cole Kropnick had the goals for the Raiders, while Harder made 11 saves in goal.
Espinola's goal was the third of his ESU career. He was inches away from scoring at the conclusion of the first half, but a Shippensburg defender cleared his shot off the line as the buzzer sounded.
Lysell now has a team-high three goals on the year after his 40th minute marker in the opening half.
The Warriors return to Eiler-Martin Stadium on Saturday, hosting Slippery Rock in a PSAC matchup scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
