CALDWELL, N.J. – The ESU women's tennis team opened up the fall portion of its 2017-18 schedule with a 5-4 defeat at Caldwell on Friday.
The teams split the six singles matches, but the Cougars (1-0) earned the victory after taking two of the three doubles contests.
Sophomore
Marina Zardet, a second team All-PSAC East singles player last spring, turned in another strong performance in this year's opener, winning 6-3, 6-3 over Rebecca Ryan in her collegiate debut at the No. 1 singles position. Zardet was ESU's primary No. 3 singles player a year ago, finishing with an 11-6 record (10-4 in duals). Eleven of her 12 singles victories have come in straight sets.
Sophomore
Aubrianna Stetina and junior
Lauren Morrissey added straight-set singles victories for the Warriors. Stetina blanked Claudia Romano 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, while Morrissey bested Amy Tang 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
A pair of freshmen teamed up for ESU's lone doubles victory, as
Quinn McCluskey and
Amanda Jackson earned an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position.
All six singles matches were decided in straight sets. Caldwell managed an identical 5-4 victory when the two teams opened up the 2016-17 season last September.
The Warriors return to the court next Saturday, traveling to Scranton for a dual match scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
