KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Freshman
Clare Davison totaled seven kills in the fourth set, including the match-clincher, to help East Stroudsburg University escape Kutztown with a 3-1 road victory on Tuesday night.
Set scores were 25-19, 26-24, 14-25, 29-27. The Warriors (16-3, 6-1 PSAC) maintain sole possession of first place in the PSAC Southeast division standings despite registering a season-low .022 attack percentage. ESU's 29-27 fourth set tied its longest of the season; Davison's final kill came on the fifth match point for the visitors.
Freshman
Emily Meredith registered a season-high 28 digs for the Warriors, topping her previous best of 26 which was established last Saturday against Shippensburg. Junior
Jasmine Williams added four kills and a team-high six blocks, while junior
Becca Huddleston supplied three aces.
Nothing came easy for ESU in its Southeast opener, as the Golden Bears (6-10, 0-7 PSAC) turned a 9-3 deficit into a brief 14-13 lead in the first set. A kill from junior
Sarah Smith ignited a 3-0 run which put the Warriors back ahead for good, with a kill by redshirt sophomore
Trea-sure Ketter ultimately clinching the set.
Smith finished with 11 kills and 15 digs, registering her eighth double-double in the past 10 matches.
Kutztown then held a 19-13 advantage in the second set, and the home side held a pair of set points at 24-22. A Williams kill saved the first of those points, and after two Golden Bear attack errors Williams and junior
Sam Dunphy teamed up for a block to double ESU's lead in the match.
Following a third set to forget, the Warriors fell behind 11-6 in the early stages of the fourth. Kutztown maintained a 20-16 edge later on, but a pair of aces from Huddleston highlighted a 4-0 run to level up the frame.
Kills from Davison, appearing in her second match of the season, accounted for three of ESU's final four points.
Holly Owen and Erin Patterson had eight kills apiece, while Sydney Wilson totaled 37 digs to lead the Golden Bears.
The Warriors remain on the road this weekend, traveling to Lock Haven on Friday and Bloomsburg on Saturday. Both of those matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
