Borjesson’s Double-OT Winner Lifts ESU Women’s Soccer Past Edinboro, Into PSAC Tournament

Box Score

EDINBORO, Pa. – Freshman Philippa Borjesson delivered a game-winning goal with 5:15 left in double overtime, lifting East Stroudsburg University to a key 2-1 comeback victory at Edinboro on Saturday.

The Warriors (11-5-1, 10-4-1 PSAC) clinched a spot in the PSAC tournament, ensuring that they will have a chance to play for a fifth-consecutive conference title. ESU has now won four of its past five meetings against the Fighting Scots (5-10, 4-10 PSAC).

Borjesson's winner was a long-distance effort from approximately 20 yards out. It was the second goal of her collegiate career, and it provided ESU with its first sudden-death victory of the season.

Junior Monica Wood sent the game to overtime on an equalizing goal with 28 minutes remaining in regulation. Her team-leading seventh strike of the season cancelled out a tally by Danielle Chatten 25:20 into the contest.

The original 4:30 p.m. start time was pushed back due to inclement weather, and play was halted again by lighting only 15 minutes after the opening kick. The Fighting Scots controlled play for a majority of the first half, generating 12 of the game's 16 shots.

Chatten's goal, her seventh of 2018, was off a rebound after her initial attempt was blocked. Freshman goalkeeper Mauri Jackson made four saves in goal to keep the margin at one heading into the intermission.

ESU increased its offensive presence after the break, outshooting Edinboro 12-6 in the second half and earning three of the game's four corners.

Wood's goal was drilled from 25 yards out into the left-hand corner, and it was her first marker since Sept. 15 at IUP. Junior Jules Sicker recorded her third assist of the season on the equalizer.

The score remained deadlocked for the remainder of regulation. Sicker had the only shot on goal for either team in the first overtime period, while Borjesson delivered on the first scoring chance of double overtime.

ESU has one game remaining prior to the PSAC quarterfinals on Oct. 30, as the Warriors will host Clarion on Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday.
