Jasmine Mooney set new season-highs in kills and attack percentage, but it was not enough for short-handed East Stroudsburg University in a 3-1 loss to California on Friday. Set scores were 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20.
The Warriors (19-7, 9-5 PSAC), who were playing without three of their usual starters, now hold a two-game lead in the Southeast division standings over Millersville and West Chester. Rachel Priore (19 kills, 20 digs) and Sarah Moehring (18 kills, 14 digs) filled up the stat sheet for the Vulcans (17-9, 10-4 PSAC).
Smith recorded her fourth-straight double-double (16th this season, 35th overall at ESU) with 17 kills and 16 digs. She is now only 11 kills away from becoming the seventh player in program history to reach 1,000 for her collegiate career.
Coyle added 15 kills and a season-high 16 digs, while Mooney totaled 10 kills with a team-best .267 attack percentage. Mooney also set season-highs in digs (5) and blocks (3).
One of Mooney's 10 kills secured the second set for ESU to even up the match at 1-1. The teams were then neck-and-neck for a majority of the third set, with neither side leading by more than two through the first 30 points.
An Emily Bucklin block and a Moehring kill opened up a 22-18 margin late for the Vulcans. The Warriors got back within two at 24-22, but a Priore kill clinched the set and tilted the match back in California's favor.
The Vulcans then took leads of 14-7 and 23-15 in the fourth frame. Three kills from Coyle highlighted a 5-0 run which reduced the home side's deficit down to 23-20. Moehring and Bucklin, though, responded with kills to seal the contest.
