Woodbyrne’s Double OT Winner Sends ESU Women’s Soccer Past Millersville, Into PSAC Final

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – For a fifth-straight season, East Stroudsburg University will play for a PSAC women's soccer championship.

Junior Jessica Woodbyrne converted a penalty kick 2:09 into double overtime, sending the Warriors to a thrilling 3-2 victory over nationally-ranked Millersville in Friday's semifinal at Bloomsburg. ESU, which entered the eight-team tournament as the No. 7 seed, will play the host and top-seeded Huskies at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Haley Skove and senior Alex Pickett had the other goals for the Warriors (14-5-1), who twice rallied from first-half deficits to the Marauders (14-5). Both of those strikes came off Woodbyrne corners, as she set a new career-high with four points in the win. Woodbyrne added the game-winner in ESU's 2-0 victory over second-seeded and nationally-ranked Kutztown in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The Warriors fell behind 9:47 into the contest, as Talia Grynkewicz fired a long-distance effort straight into the top left corner for her 11th goal of the season. Skove answered in the 26th minute, heading Woodbyrne's corner into the back of the net to level the match at 1-1.

Freshman goalkeeper Mauri Jackson's third save of the half was a memorable one, as she dove to her right to stop a free kick by Millersville's Paige Mancini which was fired in from just outside of the box.

That briefly kept the score tied, but Millersville took its second lead with 5:17 remaining in the half, drawing a penalty after an ESU handball which was converted by Delaney Meadows.

ESU needed only less than five minutes to rally again. This time it was Pickett on the other end of a Woodbyrne corner, as she scored her second goal in as many games with 1:25 left prior to the intermission. Pickett, a three-time All-PSAC performer, now has seven career postseason goals during her time at ESU.

That was the last strike of regulation, but both teams had quality scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of the second half. A shot by Meadows in the 79th minute initially got past Jackson, but she recovered to clear the ball before it crossed the line.

ESU had three chances in the final three minutes, two of which were saved by goalie Erin Heimbach and another by Pickett which was fired off the post. Woodbyrne then nearly won it in the closing seconds of single overtime, directing a header just over the crossbar as time expired.

Pickett hit the post again 1:15 into double OT, but the Warriors maintained their pressure and Woodbyrne drew the deciding penalty less than a minute later. Final shots were 22-14 in favor of ESU.

The Warriors will be looking to win as the seventh seed for a second time during their four-year PSAC championship run. They previously accomplished the feat in 2015, a year in which they ultimately claimed the program's first-ever Atlantic Region title.

Bloomsburg advanced to Sunday's title game by topping fourth-seeded West Chester 2-0 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. The Huskies (14-2-3), who were ranked No. 7 in the latest United Soccer Coaches' national poll, edged ESU 1-0 in the team's regular season meeting on Oct. 14. This will be the sixth postseason matchup between the two sides (first since 2008).
