ESU Women’s Basketball Rides Second Half Success to 81-74 Victory against Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team rallied in the second half on Saturday as the Warriors recorded an 81-74 victory against Adelphi University.
 
ESU (4-5) snapped a two-game losing streak and recorded a win against the Panthers for the first time dating back to the 1987 season. The Warriors and Panthers played for the seventh time in a series that saw ESU win each of the first two contests before dropping four straight (1988-2014).
 
Adelphi (6-4) shot just 32.1 percent as a team in the second half after connecting on half of its shots against the Warriors in the opening half. The Panthers also struggled from 3-point range, going just 2-of-15 in the contest.
 
Sophomore Abby Schoffstall played 22 minutes off the bench for the Warriors in the contest and dished out a career-high seven assists for ESU. Schoffstall also matched a career best with four rebounds and three steals. Junior Tiffany Lapotsky paced the Warriors offensively with 17 points and a career-high nine boards, while sophomore Amanda Pike connected on a game-high five 3-pointers to finish with 16 points. Sophomore Marlene Bassett added 14 points for ESU, while junior Jordan Hertz tallied 12 points.
 
Leonie Edringer scored a game-high 22 points for the Panthers but cooled-off in the second half after registering 16 points in the opening 20 minutes. Edringer also notched a double-double, pulling down 11 boards to go along with three assists and two blocks. Niajah Morgan and Emily Miccile each tallied 15 points for Adelphi, while Katie Murphy added 13 points and a team-high four assists.
 
Adelphi started the contest on an 8-0 run thanks to Edringer, who hit three of her four shots from inside the paint. ESU stopped the run at the 7:15 mark as Hertz completed an and-one opportunity to make it 8-3. The Panthers would take their first double-digit lead of the contest with 2:39 remaining as Miccile hit a jumper to make it 18-8.
 
Trailing 29-16 with 8:23 left in the second quarter, the Warriors would go on a run to cut into the Adelphi advantage. Lapotsky and Pike got things going for ESU from behind the arc as the two combined for three treys to pull the Warriors within six (31-25) with less than seven minutes left to play. ESU trimmed the deficit to a single possession with 4:51 left in the half but would see the Panthers run the advantage back up to 12 points with just over a minute left to play. Sophomore Kaitlyn Swint finished a layup in the paint with nine ticks left on the clock to send ESU into the half trailing 44-34.
 
ESU looked to gain some momentum in the third quarter and get the deficit down to single-digits. Bassett started an 8-0 run for the Warriors with 7:05 to play as she went 4-for-4 from the field to cut the Adelphi lead to 51-50. It would later be a one-point lead for the Panthers before Edringer put her team up by three with a minute left to play.
 
Bassett gave the Warriors their first lead of the contest with 4:47 left to play in the fourth quarter as her layup made it 65-64. Freshman Maggie Wigoda, playing in her first game for the Warriors, collected her first collegiate bucket with 4:18 remaining to make it 67-65. Adelphi rallied to knot the score on two more occasions down the stretch as Miccile converted a pair of free throws to make it 72-72 with just under two minutes to play.
 
The Warriors would take the lead for good with 1:27 left to play as Bassett finished a layup in the paint to make it 74-72. ESU scored each of its final seven points at the free-throw line, with Lapotsky going 6-for-6 to secure the 81-74 victory.
 
The Warriors continue their season-long seven-game road trip with a pair of mid-week matches against PSAC members Seton Hill and Cal (Pa.) on Tuesday and Wednesday. ESU returns to Koehler Fieldhouse on Jan. 9 with a 6 p.m. matchup against PSAC member, Lock Haven.
