EAST STROUDSBURG – Redshirt freshman
Nate Fiala and junior Nate Durkin combined on a five-hit shutout and sophomore outfielder
Carson Freeman had an RBI single in the sixth inning for the game's only run as East Stroudsburg University blanked Millersville, 1-0, in the nightcap to split a PSAC East baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Mitterling Field.
Fiala went 5.0 innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and five walks, and Durkin threw the final 2.0 frames, allowing two hits with two strikeouts and one walk. They combined to strand 10 Marauders on base, with Fiala leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning and Durkin stranding three in the sixth.
Freeman's one-out RBI single in the sixth provided the offense as ESU had four hits in the inning after being held to one hit in the first five frames by Drew Miller (5.1 IP, 1 run, 5 hits, 6 strikeouts, 1 walk).
Millersville (25-14, 13-7) won the opener, 6-4, after winning both games Saturday on its home field, 2-0 and 6-2.
Freeman started game one for ESU (18-19, 7-13), throwing 5.0 innings, and was 2-for-4 with three RBI, a run and two stolen bases offensively.
Fiala lowered his ERA to 2.70 in his 15th appearance of the season and second start. He has allowed just 14 runs (10 earned) in 33.1 innings and maintains a 4-1 record after leaving with a no-decision on Sunday.
Game 1
Freeman had a hand in all four ESU runs, including a two-RBI single in the third inning to get the Warriors on the board. He stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by freshman 3B
Brock Kauffman, and in the fifth, he had an RBI single to plate sophomore SS
Joey Paolini, who walked and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Kaylor Kulina was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs for Millersville, which scored a run in the first inning, three in the second including a two-run double by Dominic Hardaway, and two in the fourth on a two-RBI single by Kulina.
Tyler Yankosky earned the win for Millersville, improving to 4-2 with 4.2 innings (4 runs, 3 earned, 4 hits, 6 strikeouts, 2 walks).
Bobby Dorta retired all six batters he faced, stranding two Warriors in the fifth with a 6-4 lead, and Christian Wingard got the final out for the save.
Paolini singled and scored in the third, and walked and scored in the fifth, to reach base twice and score two runs.
Freeman surrendered six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts and one walk while helping his own cause at the plate.

The first four Warriors all singled in the inning – Paolini led off with a base hit and Edwards bunted for a hit before Paolini was picked off. Edwards moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Freeman's RBI single to right, and senior C
Steven Zimmerman, Jr. singled before Mike Mock entered to get a double play to end the ESU threat.
Fiala retired the side in the first, stranded two in the second and third, and then left the bases loaded in the fourth. He threw a 1-2-3 fifth before giving way to Durkin, who pitched in and out of trouble with a groundout to strand three in the sixth.
Durkin threw a perfect seventh, including two strikeouts, to seal the victory and earn the win in relief.
