SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University sophomore Austin Horner won 3 of 5 contested events to begin the decathlon on Day 1 of the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, giving him a strong lead of 223 points halfway through the multi.

Horner posted personal-bests in four events, and took first place in the long jump, high jump and 400m as the three-day meet got underway at Slippery Rock on Friday. He has 3,764 points through five events, while Slippery Rock's Steven Girgash, the indoor champion in the heptathlon, is in second place with 3,541 points.

The competition began with the 100m, where Horner's second-place effort of 11.17 was well under his previous best of 11.55. He then won the long jump with a top distance of 22-8 1/2, and placed fifth in the shot put with a top toss of 35-5 1/4 (over five feet further than his previous PR of 29-9 1/4).

Horner concluded the afternoon with wins in the high jump (6-5 1/2) and 400m (49.54), with the 400m time over a second under his previous best (50.80). His marks in the long jump, high jump and 400m were all under the PSAC-qualifying standard. Horner's DII provisional standard decathlon score of 6,487 points, established at Kutztown's Mondschein Multi in April, ranks second all-time in ESU history.

Fourteen other Warriors began their championship meet on Friday as well, with sophomore Me'Saj Closs earning the first point in the team standings for the women with an eighth-place showing in the hammer. Her top distance of 152-5 helped her score for the first time outdoors at ESU.

Junior Michayla Weitman sits in fourth place through 4 of 7 events in the heptathlon, registering a Day 1 score of 2,480 points. She began the morning with a PR time of 15.64 in the 100m hurdles. That mark is also under the PSAC qualifying standard of 15.80. Weitman placed eighth in the heptathlon in 2016, and she took sixth place in the pentathlon at this year's Indoor Championships.

Day 1 concluded with finals in the 10,000m. Senior Jasmine Amro scored individually for the first time in her Warrior career, taking eighth place after completing the distance event in 39:18.82. Junior J.P. Montgomery was just outside the scoring places in the men's race, as he placed ninth with a time of 33:17.98.

The PSAC Outdoor Championships continue all-day on Friday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the resumption of the men's decathlon. Field events start at 12 p.m., and non-multi events on the track open with prelims in the 4x100m relay at 1:05 p.m.
