EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University registered a perfect start to its 2018 season on Thursday, as the Warriors posted 3-0 sweeps over Bloomfield and Mercy in a tri-match at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Junior
Jasmine Williams totaled 13 kills (.375 attack percentage), five blocks and four aces across both matches, while freshman
Andrea Coyle had a team-high 16 kills. Sixteen different players contributed to the two victories, with 12 managing at least one kill offensively.
The Warriors (2-0) remain at home for another tri-match on Saturday, as they host USciences at 11 a.m. and Merrimack at 3 p.m.
Match 1: ESU 3, Bloomfield 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-21)
ESU had a team attack percentage of .252 in its win over the Bears. Williams led the offensive attack with 11 kills (.421%), two aces and a pair of blocks.
Coyle added eight kills, one of which wrapped up the opening set for the Warriors. The home side had a slim 19-17 advantage late in the second before a kill by junior
Sarah Smith began a 6-0 run which doubled ESU's set advantage.
Head coach
Kevin Rodgers made several lineup changes in the third set. Freshman
Anna Salasky totaled six kills while making her collegiate debut in the frame, and fellow freshman
Kayla Lugo added 13 assists.
Bloomfield was within a point at 21-20 in the closing stages of the set, but Salasky and Williams followed with two kills apiece in a deciding 4-1 run to close out the match.
Smith and junior
Sam Dunphy joined Salasky with six kills offensively, while senior
Tina Predojevic and freshman
Emily Meredith each added eight digs.
Match 2: ESU 3, Mercy 0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-14)
Smith and Coyle tallied a team-high eight kills in the Warriors' sweep over the Mavericks (1-1). Smith added nine digs on the defensive side to finish just shy of her 20th career double-double.
With the score knotted at 9-9 in the first set, a Williams kill fueled a 7-0 run to put the Warriors in control. ESU was then ahead 22-20 late in the following frame, when two Smith kills and a Predojevic ace upped the Warrior set advantage to 2-0.
More lineup changes were made to begin the third, where redshirt sophomore
Trea-sure Ketter led the way with four kills and three blocks. ESU never trailed in the final set after winning each of the first seven points; Lugo set up freshman
Kailyn Pyle for the match-clinching kill.
Meredith had another strong outing from the libero position, registering a team-high 16 digs. The Warriors limited Mercy to a -.029 hitting percentage across the three sets.
