Abbott’s First Half Hat Trick Lifts ESU Women’s Soccer to 6-1 Win at IUP

Box Score

INDIANA, Pa. – Junior Nicole Abbott needed only 24:04 to notch the first hat trick of her collegiate career, as she scored half of East Stroudsburg University's six goals in a dominant 6-1 road win at IUP on Saturday.

Abbott added an assist midway through the second half for the Warriors (3-2-1, 3-1-1 PSAC), who avenged a 1-0 home loss to the Crimson Hawks (4-3, 3-3 PSAC) last season. She becomes the 15th player in program history to record a hat trick (first since senior Alex Pickett in 2016), and her seven points are tied for the fifth most in a single game all-time at ESU.

IUP held a brief 1-0 lead on a 10th minute strike by Mahogany Willis. ESU, though, needed only 52 seconds to find an equalizer, as junior Hannah Saggese lofted a high shot past goalkeeper Madeline Smakulski. Saggese, a first team All-PSAC selection at back in 2017, netted her first goal in 41 career appearances. Sophomore Haley Skove picked up an assist on the play.

Abbott's first goal came in the 19th minute, as she headed in a cross from freshman Philippa Borjesson. Her second strike less than five minutes later came on another cross, this time from Pickett on the right side of the field. Borjesson's assist was her first point as a Warrior, while Pickett is up to a team-high five helpers this season.

Abbott's hat trick was completed on an unassisted strike. She entered Saturday's contest with six goals in her first 32 games at ESU.

The Warriors added two more insurance goals in the second half. Abbott led in junior Monica Wood for her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 70th minute, and freshman Mallory Johnson set up junior Jessica Woodbyrne for her first goal of 2018 with under six minutes remaining in regulation.

Wood has now scored in three-consecutive games, and in 5 of 6 contests overall this fall.

ESU ended the afternoon with a 19-9 advantage in shots. Freshman Mauri Jackson made eight saves to register her second-straight win in goal.

The Warriors return to Eiler-Martin Stadium for their next contest, hosting California at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
