EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior
Marina Zardet posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, earning the lone point for East Stroudsburg University during a 6-1 setback to Scranton in its 2018-19 opener on Saturday.
The Royals (1-0) earned straight-set wins in four of their five singles victories. Several new rules changes for Division II were implemented, with no-advantage scoring throughout, the three doubles matches counting as one point, and doubles matches played to six games instead of the previous eight.
Zardet, a second team All-PSAC performer as a freshman, earned the 20th singles victory of her collegiate career. She is 20-15 overall at ESU, including a 18-11 mark in dual contests.
Senior
Lauren Morrissey came the closest to recording another win for the Warriors, as she forced a super-tiebreaker against Stephanie Hoffman before ultimately falling 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
ESU returns to action on Saturday and Sunday next weekend, traveling to Bloomsburg to take part in the annual Bloomsburg Fall Invitational.
