EDINBORO, Pa. – Junior
Jasmine Williams had a career-high 17 kills, including three in the decisive fifth set, as East Stroudsburg University held off Edinboro for a 3-2 road victory on Friday night.
The Warriors (13-2, 3-0) topped the Fighting Scots (7-6, 0-3) for the first time since 2012 and remained perfect against PSAC competition. Set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 15-25, 26-28, 15-6.
After trailing 2-0, the home side won back-to-back sets, including an extended fourth, to send ESU to its first 5-set match of the season. The Warriors, though, wasted no time getting back on track in the final frame, jumping out to a 10-1 lead and hitting .500 as a team to close out the win.
Junior
Sarah Smith and freshman
Andrea Coyle joined Williams with three kills apiece in the fifth. Smith (16 kills, .412 attack percentage, 15 digs) recorded her fifth double-double in the past six matches.
Williams entered tonight never having surpassed 11 kills in her collegiate career. She went well above that total on Friday, and her 17 kills came with a stellar .696 hitting percentage. Williams also added nine blocks (1 BS, 8 BA), establishing a new season-high in that category. She entered the weekend ranked first in the PSAC and ninth in Division II at 1.36 blocks per set.
Senior
Tina Predojevic also had a night to remember for the Warriors. She finished with a career-high 52 assists, a total which is the most by any ESU player since the NCAA moved to 25-point set scoring in 2008. Predojevic supplied 15 digs in the victory as well.
Junior
Sam Dunphy added seven block assists for ESU, which at 16-13 out-blocked their opponent for a 14th consecutive match. Back-to-back block assists by Dunphy and Williams wrapped up the second set for the visitors after the score was tied at 23-23.
Freshman
Caylinn Davis joined Williams and Smith with double-digit kills, as she recorded a season-high 10. Freshman
Emily Meredith led the defensive effort with 16 digs, reaching double-digits in that category for a 10th-consecutive match.
ESU is right back in action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Slippery Rock for a PSAC contest scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
