EAST STROUDSBURG – Kaitlin Hatch scored the game-winning goal with 53 seconds left in the first overtime, sending No. 3 West Chester to a 2-1 victory over No. 1 East Stroudsburg University at Whitenight Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Rams (5-1) won their fifth game in a row, and they ended a three-game winning run for the Warriors (4-2).

West Chester controlled play for a majority of the first half, and Katie Thompson put the visitors in front with a low shot into the left corner 19 minutes in.

ESU, though, equalized less than three minutes prior to the intermission off a penalty corner. Senior Ashley Ceschini had an initial shot blocked, but her second attempt was deflected in by senior Makenna Marhefka to level the score at 1-1.

Marhefka netted her second goal of the season and the 10th overall in her Warrior career. Ceschini picked up her second collegiate assist on the play.

ESU then controlled play for a majority of the second half, earning eight of the game's 10 penalty corners during that span. The Warriors had two chances to move in front in the final minute of regulation, but senior Paige Harrold had a shot saved by goalie Marissa Elizardo, and freshman Celeste Veenstra's follow-up was sent wide.

The two teams traded shots in the opening half of overtime prior to Hatch's game-winner. She was led into a scoring position by Caitlin Kelly, and sent a high shot into the top right corner to seal the West Chester victory.

Junior Maddie Richie made seven saves in goal for the Warriors. Shots overall were 17-11 in favor of the Golden Rams.

ESU returns to action with a 12 p.m. road contest at Seton Hill on Saturday. That will be the final game prior to the start of PSAC play next Wednesday, when No. 4 Shippensburg comes to Whitenight Field for a 4 p.m. matchup.
