EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior
Sarah Smith notched a career-high 26 kills in her latest memorable performance of the season, but it was not enough for East Stroudsburg University in a 3-1 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21. The Raiders (16-2, 6-0) remain unbeaten in PSAC play, while the Warriors (15-3, 5-1) see a five-match winning streak come to an end.
Smith's 26 kills were backed by a stellar .339 attack percentage, and they are the most by an ESU player in a four-set match since the NCAA went to 25 point set scoring prior to the 2008 season. She added 19 digs for her seventh double-double in the last nine matches (28th overall at ESU). Smith has hit over 25 percent in 15 of 18 matches on the year.
Junior
Jasmine Williams added a match-high eight blocks for the Warriors, who at 11-6 out-blocked their opponent for a 17th straight match. Senior
Tina Predojevic provided 36 assists, 11 digs and four blocks, while freshman
Andrea Coyle registered her third double-double of the fall with 10 kills and 12 digs.
Freshman
Emily Meredith had another strong day defensively for ESU, totaling a season-high 26 digs in the loss. She has reached double figures in digs in each of the last 13 matches.
The Raiders entered the afternoon with nine consecutive 3-0 sweeps during a 14-match winning streak, but the Warriors ended that run with a strong effort in the opening set. Meredith had 11 of her 26 digs in the first set, and Smith powered the offense with seven of her 26 kills.
Shippensburg returned to form in the following two sets, and the Raiders led 21-11 late in the fourth set. ESU responded with a spirited rally to get within three points at 24-21 before a Kendall Johnson kill secured the win for the visitors.
Gabriella Johnson (16 kills, 15 digs), Morgan DeFloria (15 kills, 18 digs) and Samantha Webber (13 kills, six blocks) were the statistical leaders for Shippensburg. Emily Hangen added 49 assists in the victory.
The Warriors maintain a one-game lead over West Chester and Millersville in the PSAC Southeast division standings after West Chester dropped a 3-0 decision at Lock Haven on Saturday. ESU opens up division play on Tuesday night, traveling to Kutztown (6-9, 0-6) for a match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
