BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – East Stroudsburg University continued its best start since 2006 on Saturday, posting a pair of four-set victories over LIU Post and Stonehill to improve its overall record to 10-1.
Junior
Sarah Smith and freshman
Anna Salasky each had 13 kills in the opener against LIU Post (6-3), which went 28-6 and advanced to the NCAA DII tournament last season. The Warriors have now topped three teams which qualified for the national tournament a year ago.
Smith added 22 digs against the Pioneers, and she recorded another double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs against Stonehill (4-3). Junior
Sam Dunphy (10 kills, 11 digs, seven blocks) and redshirt sophomore
Trea-sure Ketter (team-high nine blocks) also had strong performances in the win over the Skyhawks.
ESU has one more non-conference matchup, a 7 p.m. road game at Pace on Tuesday, before beginning PSAC play at home against Gannon at 7 p.m. next Friday.
Match 1: ESU 3, LIU Post 1 (25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 26-24)
The Warriors hit over .300 as a team in the opening set, and they remained over 20 percent in Set 2 to quickly jump ahead of the tri-match hosts. After the Pioneers pulled out a win in the third set, ESU gave itself six match points with a 24-18 advantage in the fourth.
LIU Post, though, saved all six of those points to level up the score. The Warriors rebounded with kills by Dunphy and Salasky to avoid their first fifth set of the season.
Salasky's 13 kills were seven ahead of her previous season-high, and she came within one dig of her first collegiate double-double. Dunphy added 12 kills with a team-high .345 attack percentage.
Four ESU players reached double figures in digs, with Smith followed by senior
Tina Predojevic (16), redshirt sophomore
Abby Moore (12) and freshman
Emily Meredith (11). Predojevic added 44 assists for the Warriors. ESU picked up its first win over LIU Post since 2006.
Match 2: ESU 3, Stonehill 1 (22-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-17)
Defense was also a key factor for the Warriors against the Skyhawks, as they limited Stonehill to a .027 attack percentage and held an 80-68 advantage in digs. They also dominated at the net, finishing with a 15.5 to 6 advantage in blocks.
Predojevic led the way with 18 digs to go along with a season-best five blocks. Meredith and Smith followed with 16 digs apiece.
The Warriors' 28-26 victory in the third set was their longest of the season thus far. ESU saved three set points before ending the frame on a 3-0 run. Ketter played a role in all three points, registering a kill and assisting on a pair of blocks with Predojevic.
Dunphy's double-double was the second of her ESU career, and her seven blocks were a new season-best. Smith, meanwhile, picked up her fourth double-double in the past six matches. Her 11 kills were backed by a .281 attack percentage.
