SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite getting a season-high 16 points from senior
Noelle Powell, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team dropped a 78-57 decision to Le Moyne College in non-conference action, Wednesday night.
ESU (6-7) forced the Dolphins into 17 turnovers in the contest and tallied 24 points but hit just nine shots from the field in the second-half. Le Moyne used a strong third-quarter performance to extend its first-half lead over the Warriors.
Powell connected on a team-high three 3-pointers in the contest and went 5-for-6 at the free-throw line for ESU. Junior
Tiffany Lapotsky tallied 13 points for the Warriors, while sophomore
Abby Schoffstall matched a career-high with nine points. Junior
Dominique Rayam added a season-high seven rebounds for ESU and notched seven points.
McKayla Roberts scored a game-high 18 points and hit a game-high four 3-pointers for Le Moyne. Roberts paced a total of four Dolphins that crossed the double-digit mark on the night. Jenna Zimmerman tallied 16 points, while Corinne Poitevien notched 15 points. Cameron Tooley rounded out the double-digit scoring for Le Moyne with 12 points.
ESU held an early 7-4 lead in the contest as Lapotsky drained a 3-ball off an assist from sophomore
Marlene Bassett with 5:56 left in the opening quarter. The Dolphins quickly knotted the score as Roberts drained a three of her own to knot the score at 7-7. Le Moyne would answer with a 10-0 run to take a 14-7 advantage following a layup from Colleen Corcoran.
The Warriors would claw their way back as Bassett hit consecutive shots with less than a minute to pull ESU even with Le Moyne at 16-16. Roberts would tally the final points of the quarter as her 3-pointer beat the buzzer and put the Dolphins up 19-16 heading to the second quarter. ESU trimmed the deficit in the second quarter to a single point but would be unable to knot the score heading into the half as Le Moyne held a 37-31 advantage.
Le Moyne tallied 24 second-chance points in the contest as it out-rebounded ESU 47-26. The Warriors would get 27 points from their bench in the contest compared to 15 points from the Le Moyne bench. The Dolphins had their inside game working throughout the night as Le Moyne tallied 40 points in the paint.
The Warriors return to action on Saturday with a PSAC East matchup against Shippensburg at 1 p.m. ESU returns to Koehler Fieldhouse on January 9 for a 6 p.m. matchup against Lock Haven.
