EAST STROUDSBURG – A strong start from the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball would fall short in the end on Wednesday night as the Warriors dropped an 80-67 decision against Millersville inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
ESU (8-12, 5-8 PSAC) dropped its fifth consecutive matchup and allowed its opponent to score 80 or more points for the third straight contest. The Warriors finished the night 25-of-77 (32.5 percent) from the field. Millersville (8-12, 5-8 PSAC) won for the second consecutive game, outscoring the Warriors 42-34 in the second half.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Swint paced the Warriors with a career-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. The seven field-goals were also a career-best for Swint, who also matched a career-high with five rebounds. Junior
Tiffany Lapotsky extended her streak of scoring 10 or more points to 13 straight contests, tying Jackie Yandrisevits (2007-08) and
Allison Howard (2016-17) for the third-most all-time in program history. Sophomore
Abby Schoffstall added 11 points and matched a career-high with six rebounds for the Warriors.
Lauren Lister, who entered the contest averaging 21.1 points per contest for Millersville, dropped 27 points to go along with eight rebounds. Lister also tallied four blocks and three assists while going 13-of-17 at the free-throw line. Olivia Mottern and Courtney Dimoff combined to score 26 points for the Marauders. Mottern tallied 13 points and nine boards, while Dimoff went 3-of-7 from downtown to go along with five rebounds.
The Warriors tallied the opening four points of the contest and would lead by as many as 10 points following a jumper from Lapotsky to make it 14-4 with 3:35 remaining. Millersville rallied to trim the deficit to five points thanks to a layup from Mottern with 1:21 left on the clock. Schoffstall gave ESU a 19-10 advantage with less than a minute to play before the Marauders closed on a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 19-13.
Millersville took its first lead of the night with 7:18 to play in the second quarter as Kendra Bamberger finished a layup to make it 22-21. The Warriors would drive back down the court as redshirt freshman
Julia Kutz gave ESU the lead back, 23-22. The Marauders would eventually take the lead for good with 6:14 left in the half as Lister hit a layup to make it 24-34. The advantage for Millersville would be five (38-33) heading into the half as Lister hit a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left on the clock.
ESU trailed by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter but would end the contest on a 12-0 run. Schoffstall connected on one of her two 3-pointers during the stretch for the Warriors. Junior
Jordan Hertz and Swint tallied back-to-back layups for ESU to trim the deficit to 80-63. ESU finished the night 4-of-4 at the charity stripe as Millersville secured the 80-67 victory.
The Warriors host Shippensburg on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in a PSAC East matchup. ESU wraps up its three-game homestand on Feb. 9 against Mansfield at 1 p.m.
