EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman
Ryan Smith totaled 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, leading six East Stroudsburg University players in double figures during an 83-65 home victory over Lock Haven on Wednesday night.
Redshirt senior
Josh Williams added 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Warriors (10-4, 7-1 PSAC), who won their eighth straight game at Koehler Fieldhouse against the Bald Eagles (5-6, 4-4 PSAC). ESU was back at home for the first time since an 82-66 win over Slippery Rock on Dec. 3.
Williams leads all PSAC performers with eight double-doubles on the year. Redshirt senior
Jakwan Jones, who tops the conference in assists per game (5.9) added eight helpers tonight to go along with 14 points.
Senior
Nick Giordano chipped in 14 points (5-7 FG, 3-4 3FG) in the victory. Junior
Michal Weiss (12 points, 6-7 FG) and junior
Montrel Morgan (11 points, eight rebounds) rounded out ESU's double-digit scorers.
Back-to-back Weiss layups capped a dominant 16-0 run by the Warriors to start the contest. ESU held the visitors off the scoreboard for the first 7:20 of the opening half, and led by as many as 18 points (28-10) prior to the intermission.
Lock Haven reduced the deficit to 40-29 by halftime, and got as close as six points at 47-41 with 12:51 left in regulation. Four points from Jones and a 3-point play by Morgan highlighted a 7-0 run to restore the double-digit lead, and the Warriors were not threatened for the remainder of the contest.
Christian Kelly registered 21 points and nine rebounds for the Bald Eagles, while Matt Cerruti added 15 points and six boards.
The Warriors shot 50 percent (33 for 66) from the field overall, and they were 42.1 percent (8 for 19) from 3-point range. ESU had all five starters (Williams, Smith, Jones, Morgan, Giordano) score in double figures for the first time since a PSAC matchup at Gannon on Dec. 16, 2014.
Williams has five double-doubles in his last seven appearances; he is now averaging a double-double this season with 15.9 points and a PSAC-leading 10.0 rebounds per game. Smith, meanwhile, has scored 10+ points in seven-straight games and 11 of 13 appearances overall. His three blocks were a new season-high.
ESU extended its winning streak at Koehler Fieldhouse to 16 games, a streak which began on Dec. 30, 2017 and is tied for the fifth-longest in program history.
A tough test awaits to extend that run, as the Warriors will host PSAC-West leading IUP at 8 p.m. next Wednesday. The Crimson Hawks (14-0, 7-0 PSAC) were ranked No. 3 in Division II in the latest NABC Coaches' Poll, and they were one of six remaining unbeaten teams nationally entering play on Wednesday.
