Highlights
EAST STROUDSBURG – An 11-0 run early in the first quarter of action helped propel the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team to an 81-60 victory against Lock Haven on Wednesday night inside Koehler Fieldhouse in a PSAC East matchup.
ESU (8-7, 5-3 PSAC) tallied season-highs in both field goals made (37) and field goal percentage (56.1). The Warriors opened the contest by going 11-of-17 from the floor in the first quarter. Lock Haven (8-6, 4-4 PSAC) hit just 35.8 percent of its shots on the night and struggled from downtown, going 2-of-20.
Sophomore
Abby Schoffstall paced the Warriors with a career-best 14 points and nine assists. Schoffstall also hit a career-high four 3-pointers and 5-of-9 from the field. Junior
Tiffany Lapotsky added a team-high 19 points for ESU to go along with seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Sophomore
Marlene Bassett, who entered the contest leading the PSAC in field goal percentage, went 9-of-17 from the field and finished with 18 points for the Warriors.
The Bald Eagles were guided by Ahnera Parker and her game-high 26 point performance. Parker went 11-of-23 from the field to go along with 12 rebounds and one block. Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh added nine points for Lock Haven and hit one of two treys in the contest for the Bald Eagles. Nadia Romanchock added six points, while Kendra Stanford and Tiana Garvin each tallied four points.
ESU opened the contest on a 4-0 run as junior
Dominique Rayam hit a layup just 16 seconds into action to get the scoring going for the Warriors. Trailing 4-0, Lock Haven earned three shots at the line as Rileigh Devine was fouled on her way up to shoot. Devine hit all three shots to pull the Bald Eagles within a point.
Bassett hit a jumper with 7:03 left in the quarter and sparked an 11-0 run for ESU as the Warriors saw their lead increase to 8-3. Schoffstall hit a 3-ball to give ESU a 13-3 advantage and its first double-digit lead of the contest. Both teams traded buckets in the final 20 seconds of the quarter as Shelton-Burleigh answered a jumper from Lapotsky with a 3-ball to trim the deficit to nine (23-14).
Sophomore
Amanda Pike gave ESU its largest lead of the first half as her 3-pointer with 2:25 left in the second quarter made it 38-20 and capped a 6-0 run for the Warriors. Lock Haven would tally the final points of the half as Parker earned the old-fashioned 3-point play after he layup would go with 33 seconds remaining. She connected on her free-throw attempt to cut the deficit to 40-25 heading into the break.
The Warriors wouldn't look back in the second half of action as ESU stretched its lead to 20 early in the third quarter as Schoffstall hit a layup in the paint to make it 47-27. Lapotsky gave ESU its largest lead of the night with 5:25 left in the fourth quarter as her steal and layup off the fast-break made it 74-47. Lock Haven would trim the deficit to 18 points late in the fourth quarter following a pair of made free-throws from Parker. Pike finished the scoring in the contest as she drained her second trey of the night to make it 81-60 with 20 seconds left.
The Warriors return to action next Wednesday with a PSAC crossover matchup against nationally-ranked No. 1 IUP inside Koehler Fieldhouse beginning at 6 p.m.
