No. 2 ESU Women’s Field Hockey Runs Winning Streak to Six with 2-0 Victory against Bloomsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior defender Jada Martin scored her fourth goal of the season as No. 2 East Stroudsburg University defeated Bloomsburg 2-0 at Whitenight Field on Thursday in a PSAC matchup.
 
ESU (13-1, 6-0 PSAC) got onto the scoreboard just 10:38 into the contest as Martin found the back of the net off a rebound to make it 1-0. The Warriors added to their lead at the 54:31 mark of the contest as sophomore Celeste Veenstra scored from the top of the circle off a penalty corner taken by senior Karly Conway.
 
The Warriors tallied 16 shots in the contest, including eight in the first quarter against the Huskies. Veenstra recorded three shots on goal in the contest for ESU, while Martin finished with a game-high five. The assist for Conway was her team-leading seventh of the season.
 
ESU would pressure Bloomsburg goalkeeper Hannah Barnard just over nine minutes into the contest as Veenstra took a shot that would be stopped by the Huskies netminder. Following a penalty corner at the 10:31 mark, senior Emily Spangler took a shot that would be stopped by Barnard but find its way to Martin, who deposited the loose ball past the keeper.
 
Barnard made three saves in the opening period for Bloomsburg as the Warriors took a 1-0 advantage into the second quarter.
 
Both teams would record one shot on goal in the period as Martin had her scoring attempt denied by Barnard at the 23:12 mark, while Tesa Hoffman would be unable to beat ESU senior goalkeeper Maddie Richie at the 27:22 mark.
 
The Warriors looked to increase their lead in the third quarter as Veenstra, Conway, Martin, and freshman Maddie Kline all tallied shots on goal but would see them stopped by Barnard. The scoring attempts by Kline and Martin would come just five seconds apart at the 41:54 and 41:59 mark.
 
ESU converted off a penalty corner in the fourth quarter to increase its lead to 2-0 as Veenstra beat Barnard to the left from the top of the circle after Conway inserted the ball from the right of the goal.
 
Richie recorded her eighth shutout of the season in net for the Warriors as she improved to 13-1 on the season after making one save in the contest. Barnard dropped to 0-3 on the season for Bloomsburg despite making nine saves in the contest.
 
The Warriors host Mansfield on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. as ESU will honor its 2019 senior class prior to the start of the contested against the Mountaineers. The match will be part of ESU Homecoming 2019 as the ESU football team and women's volleyball team have home contests scheduled at 2:05 p.m. and 4 p.m.
