ESU Football Falls on the Road at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – Shepherd registered 755 yards of total offense in a 76-34 victory over visiting East Stroudsburg on Saturday in PSAC East action at Ram Stadium.

Rece Bender had a career day for ESU, finishing with 312 all-purpose yards, which is the third-most in a single-game by a Warrior since 1974. Bender posted a career-high 129 yards receiving, while adding 106 kick return yards and 77 on punt returns. The sophomore notched a pair of receiving touchdowns on the day, including a career-best 75-yarder on the first offensive play of the game. Bender also added a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown, which was the longest return of his young career.

ESU quarterback Jake Cirillo posted a 17-of-32 passing day with 183 yards and two touchdowns. Devante Robinson finished with 67 yards on 15 rushes. Ezequiel Lopez notched a pair of grabs, including a 14-yard touchdown.

Shepherd was dominant on the ground in the victory, rushing for 460 yards on the day while also adding 295 in the air. Deonte Glover notched 220 rushing yards with three touchdowns, Ty Hebron netted 111 yards and one touchdown on the ground, and Ronnie Brown added 80 yards and two scores. Quarterback Tyson Bagent went 24-of-30 in the air for 284 yards and five touchdowns.

The Rams improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC East with the win, while ESU fell to 5-4 on the year and 2-4 in conference action.

The Warriors pulled out a trick play for the first offensive play of the game as Cirillo tossed one to backup quarterback Ben Moser, who threw to Bender deep down field. Bender came down with it and took it into the end zone for the 75-yard touchdown, which was the longest of his collegiate career.

Shepherd responded on its first offensive play of the game as Glover rushed for a 75-yard touchdown to even things up at 7-7 just 22 seconds into the game.

After forcing an ESU punt, Shepherd's Zane Lewis returned the punt 51 yards all the way down inside the ESU 20. After a 14-yard pass from Bagent to Devin Phelps set things up inside the five-yard line, Glover found the end zone on his third try to register his second touchdown of the game and put the Rams on top.

Shepherd broke off another long play on the first play of its next offensive drive, as Hebron ran for a 70-yard touchdown to put the Rams up by a pair of scores, 21-7, midway thru the opening quarter.

The Warriors put together a 59-yard drive that got them inside the Shepherd 20 on the ensuing possession, but Cirillo was picked by Antonio Fox to give the Rams the ball back. Shepherd was able to capitalize off the turnover with Bagent capping things off with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Phelps to make it a 28-7 advantage, which the Rams would carry into the second quarter.

Shepherd tallied the opening points of the second frame on Bagent's 3-yard touchdown pass to Alex Wetzel. A failed extra-point attempt on a bad hold kept the game at 34-7, capping off a run of 34 straight points by the Rams.

Later in the second quarter, ESU forced the lone Shepherd turnover, as Tyler Watson intercepted Bagent to set up the Warriors in scoring position. On a 3rd-and-11 play, Cirillo found Bender for his second long receiving touchdown of the game, this time a 38-yarder that cut the ESU deficit to 34-14.

After another Bagent touchdown toss for Shepherd, the Warriors responded with a 56-yard drive that was finished off by a 14-yard pass from Cirillo to Lopez to trim the deficit back to 41-21 with just under four minutes remaining in the half. The touchdown catch was Lopez' third of the season.

The Rams added a pair of touchdowns in the final three-plus minutes of the half to take a commanding lead. Glover broke off a big 82-yard touchdown run for his third of the game, before Bagent notched another touchdown pass to Brewer on the team's final possession of the half to extend the lead to 55-21.

The Rams scored on eight of their nine possessions in the opening half. They ran for 327 total yards, led by 208 and three touchdowns from Glover, while Bagent added four passing touchdowns in the half.

The Warriors got the start they needed in the second half, forcing a three-and-out on the Rams' opening possession. On the punt, Bender took the return 76 yards to the house for his third total touchdown of the game to cut the Shepherd lead to 55-28. The punt return was the longest of Bender's career and his first touchdown on a return.

Shepherd notched two more scores in the third stanza, a 42-yard touchdown from Bagent to Brewer and a 2-yard touchdown run by Brown, to take a 69-28 lead into the final quarter.

ESU kicker Jordan Walters, who is the reigning PSAC East Special Teams Player of the Week after drilling an ESU and PSAC record 56-yard field goal last week, posted the first points of the fourth quarter as he made a 27-yard field goal for the Warriors.

Later in the fourth, Brown punched in a short touchdown run for the Rams to push them above the 70-point plateau for the first time in program history. The extra point from Hayden August-Scriven made it a 76-31 game.

Walters hit his second field goal of the game, a 47-yarder with just over six minutes remaining, before Shepherd closed out the 76-34 victory to grab its seventh win of the year and fifth in PSAC East play.

The Warriors will be back at home on November 9 to take on Shippensburg at 6:05 p.m. from Eiler-Martin Stadium.
